- Coram is launching the Coram
Design Award focusing on two subjects. The first, "Bathing
in Light", challenges participants to come up with new products
to light and create an original atmosphere in a bathroom. The
second, "Bathing as a social experience", requires
participants to design products for us in public conveniences.
Registrations must be submitted by the 31st of December 2001.
Masterplan
for the Trieste waterfront -proposals to accommodate the
redevelopment of the seafront and the area stretching from Piazza
della Libertà to the Lanterna. Designs should address
accessibility issues, enabling vehicles coming from Piazza della
Libertà to reach Riva Ottaviano Augusto and the Lanterna
area, while at the same time ensuring pedestrian access to the
seafront and "preserving the architectural quality of the
general context under consideration". Registration by December
21, 2001.
Natural
History Museum of Los Angeles - New Museum Project. Competition
for a landmark architectural home for the institution, combining
the historic heart of the current building with stunning new
architecture. Registration by 14th December 01.
Expressions
of interests are invited for a new competition for the redevelopment
of St
Luke's Church in Cannock, West Midlands. The competition
seeks a design for a modern, well equipped, multi-purpose building
that would serve the whole of the Cannock community. Deadline
for expressions of interest is Monday 3rd December 2001.
The European
Commission is Promoting a Competition for Bioclimatic
Urban Redevelopment. There are two parts to the competition:
1. Revitalisation of urban industrial areas in eight european
towns. Submission date 29th Oct 2001
- 2. Insolplan - Solar residential
areas in three european towns -submission 1st Oct 2001
- Prizes total 250,000 euros (£153,000). The sites vary
in size from three to 16 ha and are largely ex-industrial areas
in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Hungary.
The EU aims to find energy-efficient solutions for the construction
of both industrial and residential schemes.
- The Berkeley
Prize Competition is an online essay contest open to undergraduate
architecture majors in accredited schools of architecture throughout
the world. The focus of the Berkeley Prize is to support the
study of Architecture as a Social Art. For the 2002 competition,
students will consider the role of the street in fostering social
life. Deadline for initial 500 word synopsis: Nov 30th 2001.
Competition
to Contribute to the Tradition of the English Country House.
Open competition for the design of a country house to be built
in a Gloucestershire valley. Entrants will be asked to produce
designs for a house that can be built in a truly exceptional
setting that will both enhance and contribute to its surroundings
and to the nation's architectural heritage. Submission Deadline:
Thursday 15 November 2001.

- The International Design Competition
for a New Tomihiro Museum of SHI-GA (poems and watercolor paintings ) in Azuma Village,
Japan. The poet and watercolor painter Tomihiro Hoshino was born
and raised in the mountainous village of Azuma, a two-hour drive
from the Japanese capital city of Tokyo. This competition aims
to create a new museum worthy of exhibiting Mr. Hoshino's works
on an international level. Deadline October 31, 2001
- The City of Reykjavík
will hold a competition for the planning of the City
Centre and the Eastern Harbour Area, Reykjavík, Iceland.
The competition area boundaries lie from Suurbugt / Norurstígur
on the west side, Klapparstígur and Ingólfsstræti
on the east side, and Sæbraut, Tryggvagata and Hafnarstræti.
Submission Deadline not later than 5th November 2001.
A new playhouse
for the Royal Theatre on the waterfront in the Inner
Harbour of Copenhagen. The Danish Ministry of Culture invites
entries for the design of a new playhouse for the Royal Theatre
on the Kvæsthusbro site in the Inner Harbour of Copenhagen.
Queries related to the competition: 6 August 2001 and 12 September
2001.

- The eighth annual GRAPHISOFT
PRIZE promotes innovative use of CAD software in architecture.
It asks entrants to create architectural works drawing from a
list of cultural references ranging from The Library of Babel
from Jorge Borges' short story of the same name, to The Mansion
in Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando, to The Girl's House in Sting's
song The Moon over Bourbon Street. Entry is free and open to
students and professionals of architecture, landscape architecture,
urban planing, or an allied discipline from any country. Closes
October 2001
Energy
Globe 2002 The award for sustainable energy. The
Energy Globe Award is open to companies, private and public institutions
and individuals from all over the world. Projects or initiatives
should involve energy efficiency or renewable energy sources
-or a combination of both. Categories are Housing, Companies, Transport,
Municipalities/Public Institutions. Projects to be submitted
by 24 October 2001.
Princess Diana Memorial Foundation -Royal
Parks Agency Competition. Artists and craftsmen from around
the world are invited to take part in a competition to design
a fountain in memory of Princess Diana. The fountain will be
built in a former pump house in London's Hyde park beside a lake
that Diana often visited. It will be finished during the summer
of 2003. Requests to participate by 22nd October.
Baunetz Architektur-Internet-Preis.
This year's subject "Metro-Poles Underground Nets``
refers to the fact that there are numerous, almost forgotten
"dead`` tube tunnels in Berlin. Most of them have either
been out of order for a long time or even more often
never have been in use. The objective of the competition is to
find a possible utilization for a combined network of these tunnel
sections. Entries should be sent in as digital web presentations,
legible with a common Internet-Browser. Although the competition
brief is in German, entries written in English may just as well
be sent in. Deadline: Oct 15th 2001
Urban
designer/Architect Competition for the development of the Historic
Ships car park, Queen Street, Portsmouth. The purpose of the
competition is to generate high quality ideas that if implemented
would optimise the development of the site architecturally, environmentally,
socially, and economically. Competitive interview with an added
design element. Each practice shortlisted will receive an honorarium
of £5000 (plus VAT).Deadline for expression of interest
12 October 2001.
Architectural Competition for the
design of a US$1,000M Urban Centre, Chile -redevelopment
of the Cerrillos airport in Santiago as part of the bicentenary
celebrations in 2010. The airport occupies an areas of 245 hectares
in the western area of Santiago and will be utilised to provide
a new urban centre. 15,000 homes, a civic centre, health, education
and sports facilities, a new residence for the President of Chile.
Open to Chilean and foreign architects. Closing date : 8th October
2001.
- Archinect
Communication Booth Competition.
How are forms of communication changing? How can architecture
accommodate this evolution in communication? Is the telephone
booth obsolete? These are just a few of the questions you may
ask yourself when designing a "communication booth",
the topic of ARCHINECT's first design competition. Deadline Oct

ACADIA Design
Competition 2001 -Association for Computer Aided Design in
architecture. The 2001 Design Competition is currently open for
registration. The design subject is the Inforum, a civic and
commercial information center in Berlin. The competition is unusual
in that it has no external jurors. The winners are determined
through a process of online voting among the participants. Registration
by Oct 1st 2001.
Nordic
Design Competition - The Modern Journey - Accessibility on public
transport To encourage progress towards travelling habits which
are in line with modern demands for accessibility,a better quality
of life and socio-economic commitments, the Nordic Council on
Disability Policy, in conjunction with the Nordic Ministries
of Transport, has decided to arrange a Nordic Design Competition
in 2001. The objective is to develop public transport into a
modern means of travel that encourages more people to use it. Applications
by September 28, 2001.
BMW's
Leipzig project -competition for the design of the first
phase of it's new Leipzig plant which will manufacture BMW 3-series
models from 2005. The competition is to design the new factory's
central building which will serve as the entrance and provide
office accommodation.The project also includes the design of
the facades of the adjoining factory which are to be based on
the design of the central building. Deadline for submitting
company profiles and examples of previous similar work is 24
September 2001.
- Duxton Plain Public Housing, Singapore The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA),
on behalf of the Ministry of National Development (MND), Singapore,
and in consultation with the Singapore Institute of Architects
(SIA), is organising an International Architectural Design Competition
for a high-density and very high-rise public housing development
at Duxton Plain in the Central Area of Singapore. Registration
Closes 21st September 2001,
UIA -International
Union of Architects: International
Project Competition for the Central Urban Park in La Paz
(Bolivia). It has been decided to revitalise a very run-down
urban zone on which will be developed a central urban park, the
first stage of a development strategy to generate a green urban
fabric in the city and its outskirts. Deadline for reception

- UIA -International Union of
Architects: International
Ideas Competition for the design of the new town of Clarendon
in Jamaica. In 1999, the government of Jamaica prepared a development
programme entitled Millennium Projects, for the island, based
on the creation of infrastructures including a highway,an airport,
a tourist resort ("Milk River Spa and resort") and
a new town in Clarendon. In the framework of this programme,
the National Housing Trust (NHT) announces an international ideas
competition, in two stages, for the design of the masterplan
of the new town, situated in the centre of Jamaica. Registration

- The First Bienal Miami + Beach 2001
The International Bienal of Architecture of Miami calls for an
international competition of "conceptual and experimental
un-built" architectural works developed between 1998 and
2001. The competition is open to all architects and students
of architecture regardless of citizenship. The only requirement
is that the project has not been constructed by the deadline
of the competition. Deadline: Sept. 15th 2001.

online July 15th - September 15th, 2001. The First Bienal of
Miami + Beach 2001 calls for an international competition of
"conceptual and experimental un-built" architectural
works developed between 1998 and 2001.

2nd International Poster Exhibition, Ningbo 2001 is being held
in Ningbo, Japan on the 5th, November. Open competition for graphic
design. In the due time, the most excellent posters from the
world will be exhibited in the picturesque port city --- Ningbo.

Indoor Swimming
Pool with Studio Competitive Interview with preliminary design
concepts. Expressions of interest are invited from Architects
for the design of a contemporary pool for a family residence
in Haslemere, Surrey. The deadline for receipt of practice profiles

Ideas Competition
for The Rabin International Peace Forum , Israel. International
Ideas Competition for the actual construction and execution of
the Rabin Sq. in Tel Aviv. The Competition is anonymous and public,
and is based on all International terms and conditions. Open
to all registered architects, landscape architects and town planners,
throughout the world. Participants are to submit one single submission,

The
Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition 2001, Japan
- Ideas Competition. In order
to activate a possible further meaning for this possibly naive
'idea competition', merely based on poetics, this competition
will be positioned within MVRDV's research into the dense 3 dimensional
city: KM3. This research program wants to investigate the reaction
of the city and the individual with the upcoming demand for densified
mixed use zones on the globe. Entries must reach address no later
than September 3 (Monday) 2001
- Manchester Court Centre Expressions of interest are invited
for an architect-led multi-disciplinary design team for a new
Court Centre in Manchester. The estimated construction cost is
£32 - £55 million.
Applicants should be capable of providing an innovative cost-effective
design which delivers a high-quality flexible space tailored
to the future needs of The Court Service. The competition has
been advertised in the EC Journal -those interested should contact
the RIBA Competitions office for a copy of the EC notice. Deadline

The RIBA Competitions Office, in association with MFI, the UK's
leading retailer and manufacturer of kitchens and bedrooms, has
launched a new competition for the design of 'The
Kitchen in the 21st Century Home'. The purpose of the competition
is to stimulate discussion about the next-generation kitchen
and set this into the wider context of the 21st century home
environment.

- The Membrane Design Competition,
that is to celebrate its 16th anniversary this year, is a global
design competition featuring membrane structures. Closes on Monday,

- Bentley Education Network (BEN)
2001 Student
Design Competition, Open to students of secondary and accredited
post-secondary schools, it includes six categories: Architecture,
Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Transportation Engineering, Plant
Engineering, Mapping/GIS, and Animation and Freeform/Artistic

- Renovation of the "Schweizerisches
Landesmuseum" (Swiss
National Museum) in Platzspitz Park. Built between 1892 and
1898, the museum is in need of comprehensive renovation. A new
building is to provide additional floor space of approx. 4,000m2

- Aqua-Centre in Aalborg, Denmark Open international design competition
for a new "Aqua-Centre", to be built in connection
with an existing sports and culture centre on the outskirts of
Aalborg. The "Vandkulturhuset" is to house a range
of water-based activities, catering for sports, games, exercise,
fun and pleasure; the centre must appeal to all age ranges. Deadline

- Virtual Museum international, interactive Art &
Architecture ideas competition
Newitalianblood.com & kwArt.com are organizing an international,
interactive Art & Architecture ideas competition that explores
the potential of exhibiting in real and/or virtual environments.
The competition calls for a re-conception of the traditional
"exhibition space" within our current sensibilities
and technologies, and at the same time, calls for the design
of new digital interfaces, online or offline, as effective alternatives
to physical spaces. Registration by July 31 2001
- The New Shape of City Housing, a 2-stage international open competition
to design housing with some 200 residences, a community salon,

- Queen's
Museum of Art Design Competition
New York City's Department of Design and Construction, in partnership
with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Queens Museum
of Art, is pleased to announce a national design competition
for an expansion to the Queens Museum of Art. Located in Flushing
Meadows Corona Park. Registration Deadline: July 16, 2001. Submission
Deadline: August 31, 2001
- The USA
Institute international design competition is open to architects,
designers and architecture students. The competition provides
an international dialogue among various schools of thought and
participants at diferent levels of experience through concrete
proposals on topics related to the specific problems in the Veneto
Region. The design competition offers ideas and solutions for
real problems characteristic of the cities and regions that host
it. Registration by July 15th.
- Urban
Studies and Architecture Institute The Magic Mountain: Stone Landscapes/ Digital
Landscapes. International
competition on the topic of Prun Stone Quarries underground and
above ground landscape and a new museum on this subject -it involves
the adaptive reuse of centuries old and now abandoned stone quarries
that now dot the hills and mountains around Verona. Registration
by July 15, 2001.
- Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian
Railways Company) have announced a two stage competition for
the design of the new Turin
Porta Susa station Passenger Terminal and an adjacent tower
block. The object of the competition is for a preliminary design
of the Passenger Terminal, about 15,000 sqm in area, for thenew
Turin Porta Susa station, and a tower block, about 35,000 sqm
in floor area, for receptions and offices. This tower block will
be built on the site of the current freight terminal. About 40
million Euro will be invested in the building of the Passenger
Terminal. Participants' entries must be registered by July 2nd.
- The
WORLD HABITAT AWARDS
are presented annually to human settlements projects that offer
sustainable futures to residents and which provide practical
and imaginative solutions to current housing problems in both
developed and
developing countries. The Awards are presented each year on World
Habitat Day. Submissions by 1st July 2001.
- International Ideas Competition for the
design of the port district in Izmir (Turkey) Municipality
of Greater Izmir - international ideas competition in conformity

requalify the asset of Agrate Brianza "central area"
Project should offer a rational solution to improve architectural

- O'Connell Street Furniture, Dublin, Ireland -Two Stage Competition.
Dublin Corporation as part
of its O'Connell St. Integrated Area Plan is seeking the design
of a range of retail vending and information kiosks and public
conveniences to be located in O'Connell St as part of the overall
upgrading of the street. To this end it proposes a two stage
design competition for the kiosks. Submission date:18 June 2001

- New Central Library in downtown Minneapolis. The new 400,000-sq. ft. Central Library
will be developed as part of a larger, two-block mixed-use project
to include a new state-of-the-art Planetarium, a vibrant public
commons, retail space, and parking. A residential tower will
be built on the adjacent block by a private developer along with
retail compatible with the housing development. Groundbreaking
is planned for 2003 with completion in 2006. Responses June 12,

- Concept Plan Competition for the Development of
an Integrated Arts, Cultural and Entertainment District at the
West Kowloon Reclamation
-conceptual proposals for the development of a prominent waterfront
area of about 40 hectares at the West Kowloon Reclamation (WKR)
into an integrated arts, cultural and entertainment district.
The objective is to enhance Hong Kong's position as Asia's premier
centre of arts, culture and entertainment and create a new look
for Victoria Harbour. The Competition is open to all qualified

- Dinkeloo
Student Competition Design and the Ecology of Public Life
- The Van Alen Institute Dinkeloo
Fellowship Competition for 2001-2002 calls for design portfolios
and accompanying study proposals that demonstrate a creative
understanding of how the design of architecture and public space
can enhance the environmental infrastructure of air, water, land,
and urban life. The Dinkeloo Fellow will reside for January -
February 2002 at the American Academy in Rome. Submission Deadline:

- Biblioteca Europea di Informazione e
di Cultura. The Milan
City Council (Comune di Milano) announces a limited International
Design Competition for the creation of a new European-standard
library to be carried out within the scope of the Milan Urban
Renewal Program and the SST of the Porta Vittoria district in
Milan. Entrants for pre-qualification by 28th May 2001.
- 2001 Design Sense Awards. Established by London's Design Museum in 1999,
Design Sense offers a £40,000 prize for the best example
of sustainable design. Submissions can be made in two categories
-architecture and product design. The closing date for submissions
is Friday 25 May 2001.
- Landscape Institute Awards
Entries are now open for the Landscape Institute Awards, held
every two years to celebrate and reward outstanding achievements
within the landscape architecture profession.
The Awards ceremony will
be held on 22nd November 2001, at the Café Royal, London.

- SCARCITY: International ideas competition for
architecture students. Tank Magazine invites architecture students
to send them their ideas about the condition of the city based
around the notion of alleviating it's conditions, practices and
ubiquity through observational study and
investigation. The submissions should concentrate on using the
pages of Tank magazine to convey your intent. First prize: £5000
Jury: Rem Koolhaas, Saskia Sassen, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Micheal

- The Regeneration of Prags Boulevard
in Copenhagen.
The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities invites
entries to an open international competition in stages for the
regeneration of Prags Boulevard, which runs through a densely
built-up old quarter of Copenhagen on the island of Amager. The
deadline for submission for the first stage is 17 May 2001.

Acres on the Lake: Open
ideas competition. DuSable Park is a three-acre plot of undeveloped
lakefront property at the mouth of the Chicago River in downtown
Chicago. Plans have been drawn up since 1987 to develop it into
a park commemorating the Haitian/French explorer, Jean Baptiste
Point DuSable, the first settler in Chicago, but the park's development
has been repeatedly postponed. Registration Deadline: May 15,

- The Royal Oak Foundation Biennial Architectural
Design Competition
- Participants are offered an
opportunity to confront directly the central design challenge
of historic preservation: significant additions to major historic
buildings. The program for the 2001 Competition is the conversion
and expansion of a major work of British Modern architecture,
Wells Coates' Lawn Road Flats, also known as The Isokon, into
a full service facility for assisted living for the elderly.

- Stage One Brief for the National Design Competition
for Neighbourhood Nurseries DfEE in association with CABE
is calling for expressions of in to design three neighbourhood
Nurseries on three diverse sites, as part of the UK government
initiative to increase childcare provision across the country.
Expressions of interest should be submitted by 12:00 noon on
Monday, 14 May.

the Urban Space 'San Fransisco de Asis' Cusco, Peru. International
Ideas Competition. As the start of the "Cusco´s Historic
Center - Integral Rehabilitation Masterplan" contruction

del Cusco" (MPC), the "Instituto Nacional de Cultura-Cusco"
(INC-Cusco) and the "Agencia Española de Cooperación
Internacional" (AECI) institutions, is considered to renovate
a relevant public space wich displays serious problems in use,

-one stage architectural competition organised by the RAIA. The

of New York's masterplan competition for the redevelopment of the vast Fresh Kills
landfill site. A winner will be revealed in the autumn. The enormous
rubbish dump, which closed at the end of March, is believed to
be one of only two man-made objects visible from outer space. Submissions due

- 13 Acres International Design
Competition Rethink the schoolyard. Enter your design ideas for
a combined park and schoolyard landscape within a newly planned
sustainability demonstration site in Surrey, BC. Proposals should
inspire exploration, empathy, free play, interpretation, revelation,
ecological awareness, and experiential learning. Entries will
be received between March 1 and April 20, 2001.
- The International
Design Resource Awards (IDRA) is an annual international
design competition to encourage the use of post-consumer recycled,
and eprocessed and sustainably harvested materials in new product
designs and buildings.
- Archiprix
2000 Dutch organised
final-year student competition. The 50 best projects will be
made into an exhibition to be held at the Mart Stam's Van Nelle
factory, Rotterdam, which has been converted into a cultural
centre. Entries by April 15th 2001.
- New England Biolabs Design Competition
In this Open First Stage, we are searching for five outstanding
design concepts for a modern Molecular Biology Laboratory that
softly melds into the Victorian architecture of the existing
estate buildings. Registration Deadline: April 11, 2001
- The
Eighth Annual International Space Settlement Design Competition! This event is
an industry simulation set in the future. High School students
prepare designs for cities in space where over 10,000 people
will live. The 2001 Qualifying Competition teams will design
the third Foundation Society settlement in Earth orbit, in the
year 2031. Submissions by April 11th 2001.

- The Leipzig Academy
of Visual Arts invites proposals for a centre
for new media art students. Entries should be extensions
or conversions of an existing building on the Academy's campus.
Architects are reminded that the building will be used for: "working
and teaching with electronic means [so the structure should be]
exemplary and pioneer shape." A shortlist of about 20 will
be drawn from a first phase international and open competition.
An impressive jury includes Jean Nouvel and Shigeru Ban.
- UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2001 Awards
for Culture Heritage Conservation
The awards programme, in its second year, recognizes excellence
in the conservation and preservation of the built heritage of
the Asia-Pacific region. Projects involving buildings at least
fifty years old and which were completed within the past ten
years are eligible for consideration. Buildings must be privately
owned or leased, and restoration must be the result of private
initiative. Houses, institutional or religious buildings, bridges
and other types of structures are all eligible. Deadline for
entries is 31 March 2001.

- International Architectural Competition for Ideas. As
basis of the work on the competition task an intensive analysis
of the theme of working and teaching with electronic means and

- Turner Centre, Margate -Two
Stage Design Competition. Architects are invited to develop proposals
for a new visual arts centre on a spectacular seafront site in
Margate, associated with the artist JMW Turner for much of his
life (1775-1851). The Centre is expected to cost £7m excluding
external works.Stage 1 Submission 20 March 2001.
