Module -public international single-stage design competition.
The objective of the competition is to find a unique system of
outdoor urban furnishings for the City of Tallinn that combines
different objects (kiosks, telephone booths, park benches, bus

fellowship in architecture -international design competition.
The Steedman Fellowship, granted since 1925, is awarded biannually
on the basis of an International Design Competition. The registration

Housing New York -Design Ideas Competition - The goal of
the competition is to expand existing concepts for high quality
affordable housing in New York City. Register by Dec 15th 2003.
- Italy: Planning
of Fiume Veneto island -Isola del Fiume, in collaboration
with the municipal administration of the city of Fiume Veneto,
is launching an international ideas competition, open and anonymous,
for the plans of Fiume Veneto Island. Deadline for reception

- Holland: Soil
and Soul -open ideas competition. In the context of the project
'Geest en Grond (Soul and Soil), culture-based planning in the
Dune and Flowerbulb Region', the Erfgoedhuis Zuid-Holland (Heritage
Centre for South Holland) is holding international ideas competitions
both for professional participants and for non-professionals.

Gateway design competition -England's finest stone town seeks
to transform two key squares through quality design. These spaces
are gateways for pedestrians and a focus for events. Expressions

Museum for Human Rights, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Canadian
Museum for Human Rights will be an international symbol and celebrate
a country that is now one of the most inclusive and tolerant
societies in the world. Through its signature architecture, galleries,
collections and programs, the museum will address the 21st Century
challenges of bridging disagreements and strengthening relationships

Hoek: The East River Community Boathouse Competition. An
international open ideas competition by AIA Emerging NY Architects
to design a boathouse for the community of Greenpoint in Brooklyn,
New York. The competition registration ends December 5, 2003.

Winter Mountain Hut Competition -the University of California,
Berkeley, College of Environmental Design and The Wiener Family
Fund for Public Architecture and Landscape is sponsoring an international
competition for the design of a 60 to 80-person wilderness base
camp facility for overnight stays. Entries by Dec 5th 2003.
- Finland: Architectural
competition - Wooden urban village of Myllypuro -The City
of Helsinki, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of
Agriculture and Forestry, the Finnish Forest Foundation and Wood
Focus Finland are organising an architectural competition in
co-operation with the Finnish Association of Architects. This
competition's objective is to find new solutions for the construction
of high-density, low-rise residential dwellings using wooden

Innovation Centre -The RIBA is launching a two stage open international
design competition on behalf of the East of England Development
Agency (EEDA) for a new Innovation Centre to be built on a prominent
site in Peterborough. The deadline for stage one submissions is 1st December.

Earthquake Memorial Competition -The goal of this competition
is to select a design proposal of Chi-Chi earthquake memorial
that can provide innovative solutions for the Chi-Chi earthquake
memorial and with respond to social, political and culture issues,

American Academy in Rome, one of the leading overseas centers
for independent study and advanced research in the arts and the
humanities, invites applications for the prestigious Rome Prize

first Precast
Castle Design Competition. Student and professional architects,
engineers, and designers are challenged to design a Medieval
castle complex including guest quarters, towers, banquet hall,
dungeon, bridge and joisting arena utilizing as many precast

aimed at finding solutions that would return the Duomo to an

design competition for a Concert Hall in Stavanger. Organised
by the National Association of Norwegian Architects. The deadline
for submitting entries is 17 October 2003.
- UK: Waterside
Housing Competition Leeds City Centre -Expressions of interest
are invited from architectural practices to design a newbuild
predominantly residential development on a 2 hectare/5acre waterfront
site in Leeds City Centre. Deadline for expressions of interest
is Monday 13 October 2003.
- Israel: The
Dan David Prize -The Dan David Foundation, based at Tel
Aviv University, is seeking nominations for its 2004 awards.
A prize of US$ 1 million will be awarded to an individual or
institution having an outstanding scientific, technological,
cultural or social impact on our world in the field of Cities
and their Historical Legacy. Closing date for nominations is
15 October 2003.

of Cities International Consultation. As part of the national

Student Award 2003. Best Design of an Accessible Hotel Bedroom
And Bathroom. The task is to design a fully accessible hotel

Mass Collaborations -FLAK seeks proposals for an exhibition
of creative work demonstrating collaboration between diverse
and interdisciplinary groups. Entrants are encouraged to consider
"the idea of Detroit" as the basis for their proposal.

Building Sights Award -Open to public and private sector
buildings. The project must have engaged the public, physically
or virtually, in the construction process. The closing date for

USA/Argentina:
Miami Bienal Competitions
Resistencia Master Plan Competition.
Sponsored by Chaco State Provincial Government (Argentina) and
Florida International University. The competition site will surround
a new convention center and include: open air theater, hotel,

for a Sustainable Future -New Spirit Challenge 2003 Organised
by Engineering for a Sustainable Future, one of the IEE's Professional

UK: ar+d
2003 -The ar+d award for emerging architecture is the biggest
award for young architects in the world and gives £10 000
in prize money. Awards
are for built or manufactured work only, and besides buildings,
the full range of design activity, from landscapes and urban
spaces to furniture and cutlery can be submitted. Deadline for receipt of entries : 16

Belgium: Ideas competition
in Brussels Research Center on Architecture of La Cambre
(CRAC- Center de Recherche Architecturale de la Cambre) .
The Plateforme Flagey is officially launching an idea competition
for the Place Flagey, a public square located in Brussels in
the neighborhood of the headquarter of the European Union. Registration

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture, established in 1977 by His

French housing The Kent Architecture Centre, on behalf of
Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE)
and Direction de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (DAPA), is pleased
to announce the launch of an international architectural design
competition. Joint Anglo-French Architect and Urban Design teams
are invited to put forward submissions of interest for the development
of affordable housing in and around London and Paris. Submit

USA: The Lower
Manhattan Development Corporation International
Competition to design a memorial at the World Trade Center site
for all those lost on September 11th and in the 1993 bombing
of the World Trade Center. Anyone, anywhere in the world 18 years
of age or older can take part in the competition, but competitors
must first register by May 29, 2003 to participate.
USA: Designing
the High Line -Friends of the High Line-a New York City-based,
non-profit coalition of local residents, businesses, and civic
groups, is pleased to announce plans for a new design competition
open to Architects, artists, designers, engineers, landscape
architects, horticulturalists, urban plannersand students.The
competition seeks visionary proposals to reuse the High Line
as a pedestrian promenade. Registration by May 23rd 2003.
Korea: Nam
June Paik Museum Competition. The competition, endorsed by
UIA (International Union of Architects), is aimed to seek a new
paradigm for the fusion of architecture and art by designing
a new museum for Nam June Paik, the media artist who broke new
ground for the contemporary art. It is to select an architectural
design of excellence so that the selected architect(s) and Nam
June Paik may jointly create a work of architecture in tune with
the pioneering, artistic spirit of the artist Paik. Registration

UK: Thames
Gateway -The London Development Agency is seeking to appoint
15 design advisors to work on upcoming architectural and urban
design in projects in the Thames Gateway area of east London.
The LDA are looking for people with specialist skills in environmental
design, urban design, landscape design, urban strategy, masterplanning,
or housing design. The closing date for applications is 16th
May.

Waterfront Competition -Toronto Waterfront Revitalization
Corporation ("TWRC") invites submissions from consultants
to be pre-qualified to provide urban planning, design and engineering

on Tees Northbank Footbridge Concept Design Competition.
Expressions of interest are invited for an RIBA competition to

Imagination Awards are designed to showcase design excellence

- IFLA World Congress 2003 -Landscapes on the Edge -Student Design Competition sponsored
by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA)
and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO). The objective of the competition is to recognise superior
environmental design achievements made by students in Landscape
Architecture programs. Submissions are due in Calgary 1 May 2003.

- USA: The
Chicago Architecture Club is pleased to announce the first
Chicago Prize Competition, a periodic 2-round design competition
intended to bring critical architectural thinking to bear on
issues pertinent to Chicago. The program is for a new 1000 car
parking garage and is drawn from the Central Area Plan, a masterplan
for Chicago's central business district (the Loop) and the adjacent
neighborhoods recently released in draft form by the City of
Chicago Department of Planning and Development. Registration/submission
April 25th 2003.
- Canada St.
Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church, Toronto, Ontario, invites
architects, designers and multidisciplinary
teams to participate in an open anonymous international design
competition. The competition includes a campus master plan and
the basic aarchitectural idea of a Cathedral to seat a congregation
of approximately 2,000, a second Church to seat 1,000, Bishop's
residence, academic school, day care, community center, museum,
retirement home, senior citizen apartment building and office
building.Registration closes on April 25th, 2003.
BEN
Student Design Competition 2003 -the Bentley Education
Network (BEN) is now accepting entries for the 2003 Student Design
Competition. This competition recognizes the innovative, technically
advanced projects that students from around the world create
using Bentley products. All students of secondary and accredited
post-secondary schools are eligible to submit projects created
with MicroStation and MicroStation-based products. Entries by
April 25th 2003.

-Manchester's Millenium Community new Housing Competition -provision for
new social housing in Manchester . World class architecture,
'green' design, new technology and a high quality public realm
will define New Islington as a special place in the City. The

- USA: Shaping
The New American Riverfront. A Competition for Memphis. Design
of a 5 acre urban event site and riverboat docking facility linking
downtown Memphis to the Mississippi River. Submission due by
April 23rd
- Europe: The
sustainable exhibition pavilion - a competition for European
Architecture students. The competition will be judged by a panel
of international architects, self-builders and contractors. The
winning project will be found in spring 2003, and finally professionally
planed in order for it to be built during a two weeks seminar
on sustainable architecture. The competition site, as the seminar,
is situated in Aarhus, Denmark. Closing Date 18th April 2003.

Plan for the Bockenheim area around the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-
University, Frankfurt. Sponsor: State of Hessen, Germany.

UK School
Design -RIBA competition Expressions of interest are invited
from architect-led teams for the design of an environmentally
innovative new primary school in the Sheffield area. Anns Grove
school is currently housed in listed Victorian buildings on a
site in Heeley, 2 miles from Sheffield City Centre. Deadline
for expressions of interest is Wednesday 16th April.

seat of the Pisa Provincial Administration in Cisanello "central park". The project
of Cisanello "central park" in Pisa is aimed at meeting
the need of giving quality to the old city expansion and to begin
an overall action, which allows for the connection between the
aspects of an urban design and the management of the territory,
in a dimension that goes beyond the city's boundaries.
- 2003 Benedictus Awards Created by the DuPont
de Nemours company, this annual awards programme, rewards
the authors of exemplary and innovative architectural designs
using laminated glass as a major element of the project.. Deadline

Library Development for Crawley. Expressions of interest
are invited for a competition being organised to complete a feasibility
study for a mixed-use development in Crawley Town Centre, including
a new library as well as housing, car parking and possible heritage

Art
Interactive Exterior Design Competition. The Art Interactive
invites designers of all backgrounds and disciplines to design
a new vision and public face for the Art Interactive gallery.
The Art Interactive occupies the corner, ground floor location
of the 130 Bishop Allen building, which was designed in the late
1950's by the modernist architect and planner Jose Luis Sert.

urban design project in Los Angeles. The competition is open

Hathershaw
Community Centre. The RIBA Competitions Office has been appointed
by Hathershaw & Fitton Hill New Deal for Communities, Oldham,
to run a competition for the design of a new Community Centre
in the Hathershaw and Fitton Hill area. The competition will
invite five architectural practices to prepare preliminary design
proposals for the new building. The winner of the competition
will then be invited to work closely with the local community
to develop a detailed design and take it through to completion.

- M.A.L.A Architectural Design Competition. The RIAI is administering a competition
on behalf of Sligo County Council. The competition is an open
two stage Design Contest for Architectural / Design Services
for the design of Branch Library and Library Headquarters, County

March 2003.
USA:
Density Competition -The Boston Society of Architects (BSA)
seeks submissions for a national design and planning competition
that will examine the role that density can play in creating
livable communities in cities and suburbs. The concepts that
emerge from the competing submissions will be a key feature of
a national conference, Density: Myth and Reality, to be held
in Boston in September. The conference will focus on alternatives
to sprawl: building, working, and living in higher density communities.

Island -September 11 Memorial. Artist/Designers Sought for
Waterfront Tribute to Victims. Borough President James P. Molinaro
announces the release of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for an
artist/design team to develop a memorial honoring the 267 Staten
Island victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Responses
due by March 7, 2003.
- Architectural
Competition for Landmark Tower/U2 Studio in a Mixed Development
at Britain Quay Dublin.
The building required is a slim point block above a platform
of a maximum of four floors and having a maximum height of 60
metres to the main shoulder parapet height and a floor area of
a minimum of 9.500 sq metres up to a maximum of 12,500 sq metres.
The two top floors must be capable of housing a recording studio
for the U2 band. Closing Date 28th February 2003.
- Stockport
Town Centre Design Competition
-Stockport Chamber of Commerce and Industry has joined forces
with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Stockport
Council, Merseyway Shopping Centre and the North West Development
Agency to launch a design competition to give a new look to part
of Stockport Town Centre. Submission Deadline: Tuesday 18 February
2003.
- OISTAT
International Theatre Architecture Competition 2003 -the International Organisation of Scenographers,
Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT). The sixth OISTAT
competition seeks open solutions to a simple design problem;
competitors can select their own site and determine many elements
of the programme themselves in order to explore their own ideas
about the relationship of performers to theatre architecture
and the nature of performance space. Submissions by February
15 2003.
- Emerging Visions Competition. This portfolio competition seeks to provide a
forum for young designers to be recognized and to share their
visions, inventions and ideas. Submissions may be built, unbuilt,
or theoretical. Entrants must be 40 and under and live and work
in the
Chicagoland area -architectural registration and AIA membership
not required. Submissions by 3rd Feb 2003.
The
Tel Aviv Museum of Art announces the launching of an open,
double- staged competition for designing a new building on the
museum grounds. The new building will be erected on vacant grounds
within the museum compound;
these constitute the Museum's last available property to date.
The new building will include three primary wings: The Israeli
Art Wing, The Architecture Wing and The Education Wing. Registration/submission
by Feb 1st 2003.
- The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) and DWELL magazine announce
a two-part project that addresses the future of affordable housing.
The first component, the HOME House Project Design Invitational,
will showcase innovative design solutions for affordable housing/living
shelter by artists, architects, and designers from the United
States. Registration by 1st Feb 2003.
- MacRobert Award 2003 -The Royal Academy of Engineering. The
UK's premier award for innovation in engineering. The Award,
first presented in 1969, honours the winning company with a gold
medal and the team members with a prize of £50,000. The
presentation of the Award recognises the successful development
of innovative ideas in engineering. It seeks to demonstrate the
importance of engineering and the role of engineers and scientists
in contributing to national prosperity and international prestige.

invites young industrial designers around the world to take part
in the 2003 BraunPrize. The theme of the competition: "Dream
real products!" Braun challenges participants to develop
product concepts for technical consumer items which represent
real innovations in design and technology and which help people

- Freedom Park, Pretoria. The Freedom Park Trust, with the support of the
National Department of Arts and Culture of South Africa, launches
an international project competition for the design of a Museum,
a Garden of Remembrance and a Memorial, dedicated to South Africa's

human rights and freedom, located on Salvakop hill, Pretoria.

- Tate in Space Student Architecture Competition. A student architecture competition

- San Jose State University Museum of Art
and Design Competition
-open two-stage competition to select a winning design and architectural
team for new Museum of Art and Design. The new Museum, which
will be built on the University campus near downtown San Jose,
will seek to inspire members of the campus and greater Silicon
Valley communities to explore the past, present, and future influences
of art and design on our lives. Submissions by Jan 16th 2003.
Mediterranean
Architectural Competition: Sustainable Mediterranean architecture
with Aluminium facades. UIA with the Greek Aluminium Company.
This competition aims to demonstrate aluminium's potential for
