USA: Architectural
Design Contest for Susquehanna Gateway Project -Historic
Owego Marketplace Inc have purchased two adjoining, vacant, burned-out
properties in the central part of the village. Their desire is
to erect a communal center court mall that will mainly include
interesting public restrooms plus access to the river and a host
of other desired things. Registration by 31 December, 2004.
USA: Flight
93 National Memorial Design Competition - Somerset, PA -Open,
two stage, anonymous competition. Honoring the heroic acts of
the passengers and crew, this is a two-stage open design competition
for the Flight 93 National Memorial at the site of the crash
of Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. vThe project is to create
a 2,000 acre National Memorial is a collaboration of the Flight
93 National Memorial Partners, the federally appointed Flight
93 Advisory Commission, Flight 93 Memorial Task Force, Families
of Flight 93, and the National Park Service. Registration period
up to 27 Dec. 2004
UK: masterplanning
& design competition - Redevelopment of Radcliffe Infirmary
Site for the University of Oxford The University of Oxford
is seeking to select a team to develop a masterplan for the redevelopment
of the Radcliffe Infirmary site. This team will also be responsible
for the design of the first new building on the site, the proposed
Institute of Mathematics. This new building must be of outstanding
architectural quality to both enhance the overall context of
the area and to act as a landmark for the redeveloped site. The
budget for the site as a whole is envisaged to be in the order
of £240m, subject to the scale of the development achievable.
Of this, the budget for the Institute of Mathematics is expected
to be in the region of £40m. Expressions of interest by
Tuesday 21st December 2004.
- Israel: One
Land, Two Systems -This architecture competition invites
architects, professional planners and others to design alternatives
for Ein Hud, one of the so-called 'unrecognized villages in Israel.
The competition is a constructive intervention by architects
and others to develop sustainable designs for Arab villages which
have been neglected by the planning system. Registration ends
December 20th 2004.
- USA: 2005
Rudy Bruner Award -the Rudy Bruner Award is given to urban
places that demonstrate the successful integration of effective
process, meaningful values, and good design. RBA winners are
distinguished by their social, economic, and contextual contributions
to the urban environment, and often provide innovative solutions
to our cities' most challenging problems. Deadline: December
13, 2004.
- USA: The
Urban Landscape Institute Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design
Competition strives to encourage cooperation and teamwork
-necessary talents in the planning, design, and development of
great places-among future real estate professionals and the many
allied professions, such as architecture, landscape architecture,
urban planning, historic preservation, engineering, real estate
development, finance, psychology, law, and others. The site,
to be announced on January 28, 2005, will be large scale and
present complex challenges, needing practicable, innovative solutions
that reflect responsible land use. The solutions are to be multifaceted,
incorporating design, planning, market potential and feasibility,
and development strategies. The submission to the competition
will be a short statement as well as a series of schematic drawings.
All applications must be received in the ULI offices by 5 p.m.,
e.s.t., Friday, December 10, 2004.
- USA: Berkeley
Prize Competition 2005 -the seventh annual Berkeley Undergraduate
Prize for Architectural Design Excellence Competition, sponsored
by the Department of Architecture at the University of California,
Berkeley. The Berkeley Prize supports the study of architecture
as a social art, and acknowledges excellence in architectural
writing and thought among undergraduate students worldwide through
discussion and examination of the social aspects of design. Undergraduate
architecture majors in accredited schools of architecture throughout
the world are offered the chance to compete in an on-line Essay
Competition and a Travel Fellowship Competition. The 2005 Berkeley
Prize Essay Competition Question concerns the Public Place. Proposals
for the Essay Prize Competition are accepted on-line from November
1 until December 10, 2004.
- International: Archprix
International Student Award -Archiprix invites universities
worldwide in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and
landscape architecture to select their best graduation project
completed after Jan 1st 2003 for participation in Archiprix International
2005. Deadline 1st Dec 2004.
USA: Open
Competition to Design a Memorial within the National AIDS Memorial
Grove. The National AIDS Memorial Grove is a seven-acre dell
in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, a living tribute
to all whose lives have been touched by AIDS. It is the only
federally designated AIDS Memorial in the United States. The
Grove is a place where people gather to heal, hope, and remember.
The goal of this competition is to identify an outstanding artistic
complement to the Grove's award-winning landscape, an icon that
will deepen, both visually and spiritually, the visitor's experience
of this important environment. The winning design will be inherently
egalitarian, expressing the cross-cultural and global impact
of the AIDS pandemic, while honoring those who have died and
those who have shared their struggle. Registration by 1st Dec

Capitol Competition -selection of a design team for a new
Alaskan Capitol on the 50th Annivesary of the Statehood of Alaska
-last day to register: 30th November.
- Canada: International
Architectural Competition For Campus Entrance The University
of British Columbia announced the launch of an International
Architectural Competition for University Boulevard, the main
entrance to its Vancouver Point Grey campus. "This competition
is an important opportunity to build world class architecture
that will define the entrance of UBC and create a new social

Undergraduate Architects Award 2005: '@ the Olympics 2012'
-Corus invites entries to its seventeenth
Undergraduate Architects Award (UGAA), the longest established
award solely for students of architecture. UGAA 2005 asks students
to explore the complex issues surrounding the theme of '@
the Olympics 2012'. The award is open to students at
all British Schools of Architecture recognized by the RIBA, or
in a school of architecture in Europe that is recognized by the
professional body of that country. Registration forms must be
received by Friday 26 November 2004.
- UK: Avenham
Park Pavilion, Preston -The RIBA Competitions Office
has announced a design competition being run on behalf of Preston
City Council, with funds provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund
(HLF) and AvenCentral Regeneration Partnership (SRB). Architectural
practices are invited to submit expressions of interest for the
Avenham Park Pavilion, by the submission deadline of 4.00pm GMT,
Wednesday 24th November 2004.

Gallery Design Competition AKA is an autonomous organization
of architects; interns; artists; designers; landscape architects;
graphic artists; marketing professionals; and design engineers
created to further dialogue about art, architecture and design.

IAHH International Student Design Competition 2005 -The International
Association for Humane Habitat (IAHH) is a voluntary organization
promoting the goals and objectives of evolving humane habitat,
through sustainable development. Early registration: November

Project Knokke Heist -The town council of Knokke-Heist has
chosen to organise an architectural competition on the site of
the Casino. The last day of registration has been set for 15
November, 2004.

Housing Competition -innovative housing in Roanoke Virginia.

- UK/France: Anglo-French
Affordable Housing Initiative -CABE, in collaboration with
France's Direction de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, are inviting
architecture practices from both sides of the Channel to express
an interest in design collaborations for four housing sites within
the perimeter of the city of Senart in France. The application
dossier of interested teams should be received by 12am (GMT)
on 12 November 2004

for a masterplan of ein-hud, israel -open to professionals
and students internationally and is aimed at planning an alternative
masterplan for the arab village of ein-hud, near Haifa, Israel.

Germany: First House prize The German
journal Bauwelt is to award its First House prize for architects
who have completed the first house of their careers. European
and overseas architects are eligible for the prize, and projects
must have been completed after 1 January 2001. The closing date
is 31 October 2004
- new USA: Robbins
Elementary School Design Competition -The City of Trenton,
the Trenton Board of Education and the National Endowment for
the Arts, in conjunction with the New Jersey Schools Construction
Corporation and New Jersey Department of Education, are pleased
to announce a national design competition for the renovation
and expansion of the Carroll Robbins Elementary School, to be
constructed with state funds as part of New Jersey's $8.5 billion
Abbott school construction program. Registration Form to be sent
by October 29, 2004.
- UK: Highcliffe
Cliff Top Cafe Design and Operating Competition -Christchurch
Borough Council. There has been a cafe on this site for many
years but the last one was burnt down in 1989. The Council
now wish to redevelop the site, and are offering members the
opportunity to enter this design competition with a difference.
The last date for receipt of entries is 29th October 2004.
- Finland: Open
International Ideas Competition Kakolanmäki, Turku, Finland
The City of Turku and the state-owned property company Senate
Properties in co-operation with the Finnish Association of Architects
(SAFA) are organising an open architectural competition on the
planning of Kakolanmäki. The competition closes 20th Oct
2004.
- USA: Clemson University seeks
the qualifications of multi-disciplinary teams to compete for
the Clemson Architecture
Center in Charleston commission. The CAC is to be located
in historic downtown Charleston. Deadline for the receipt
of stage I qualifications: October 26, 2004.
- USA: Intern/Young
Architect Competition. The AIANH Intern/Young Architect Design
Competition was created to provide an opportunity for interns
and young architects to strengthen their design skills, gain
recognition, and assist a community with their design challenges.

- Belgium: The Council of the
European Union is organising a European
competition for the restructuring of the Residence Palace Building
complex. The competition is in two stages, following a pre-selection
made on the basis of application packages, and open to architects
resident in European Union member countries. In conformity with
the UNESCO/UIA regulations, the competition has been approved
by the International Union of Architects (UIA). The Régie
des Bâtiments (Belgian State-owned building company) will
assume the role of client for the restructuring of the building.
The restructured complex is designed to host the headquarters
of the European Council and the Council of Ministers of the European
Union. The programme includes ministerial meeting rooms, offices
for the Presidency, for Member States' delegations and the directors
of the Council's General Secretariat, reception rooms, offices

Arts Center for Sørlandet, - Kristiansand, Norway.
Open international design competition for architects A combined
theater- and consert building, approx. 16.200 m2 A concert hall
with a seating capacity of 1300 and a theater with a capacity
of 350 700, and 2 other small stages. Total cost
calculated to 1100 mill. NOK (approx. 260 mill. EURO)

Reardon Smith Student Award 2004 - Best Design of a Hotel
Spa. This award is part of the highly acclaimed European Hotel
Design Awards Scheme, now in its seventh year. This scheme attracts
submissions from leading architects, designers and hotel groups
from across Europe, many of whom attend the awards dinner, to
which we will be inviting the short listed students. Closing

Museum The Bellingham-Whatcom Public Facilities District
and the City of Bellingham, Washington, are sponsoring an architectural
design competition to select a winning design and architectural

- UK: Jubilee
Gardens: Design Contest -Jubilee Gardens Steering Group,
South Bank Employers' Group issued an OJEU Design Contest Notice
in connection with a two-stage Open Project Competition to find
a design team to redevelop Jubilee Gardens in Waterloo, London.
The closing date for requests to
participate in the competition is 17 September 2004.
- Poland: Theatrum Gedanense Foundation,
Gdask, Poland announces a one
stage, international study contest for a functional and spatial
design concept for a Theatre with reference to the seventeenth
century Fencing School building in Gdask which housed the "Elizabethan
Theatre" Applications for admission to the Contest should
be submitted to the Head Office of the Contest Organiser by 15

Union Prize for Cultural Heritage.The call for entries for
the European Union Prize for Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards
(EU member states and candidates) and for the Europa Nostra Awards
Scheme (non-EU countries) invite you to submit your heritage
project or study or to nominate a person or organisation for

of an Architect for Tate St Ives Extension The RIBA is assisting
Cornwall County Council in the selection of an architect in connection
with an extension to Tate St Ives, Cornwall. Deadline for expressions

- UK: National
competition to find architectural design for a disused railway
cutting. Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, has
launched an original competition to find an award-winning architectural
design for St. Margaret's Loop, a 1km long disused railway cutting
close to East Grinstead train station. The chosen design will
influence local planners to include it in future local authority
development briefs and or supplementary papers for the new Local
Development Framework (LDF) from 2006. The competition will award
first and second place winners with prize money (worth £5,000
and £2,000 consecutively). All entries will need to be
submitted no later than 3pm on Friday 3rd September 2004.

Hans Heinrich Müller Award 2005 The Hans Heinrich Müller
Award 2005 will be awarded jointly by Berlin's energy supply
company (Bewag GmbH & Co. KG) and Berlin Monument Protection
Department, in a student ideas competition, the goal of which
is to find new uses for Berlin's industrial monuments. Documents
will be available to competition participants from 1 September
2004.
- South Africa: Siyathemba:
Soccer/Football facility for Somkele, South Africa -Architecture
for Humanity is challenging the creative world to design the
perfect pitch in Somkhele, an area with one of the highest HIV/AIDS

Prize 2005 -A competition intended to reward outstanding
achievements in architectonic details, the compositional value
of which adds character to the work as a whole.Submissions must

- UK: Atlantic
College - New International Design Competition The RIBA is
to launch an international two-stage open design competition
for new residential accommodation for students studying at Atlantic
College, Wales. The competition will seek concept designs for
four new housing blocks, each to house 40 students. The competition
brief will be available from the end of July with stage one submission
of designs due by 21st September. The Jury Panel, which includes
Roger Hawkins as the RIBA's architectural adviser, comprises
representatives from Atlantic College and its governing body.
- USA: Pamphlet
Architecture 27 Following on the success of the inaugural
"call for ideas," which produced Pamphlets 23 - 26
over the course of three years, Pamphlet Architecture announces
a new competition for 2004. The deadline for submissions is September
7, 2004.
- UK: Ecohouse
Student Designs Architectural Press and Teachers
in Architecture in conjunction with Circle 33 Housing Group,
are proud to present the 2004 Design Competition For An Ecohouse.
The last date for the delivery in Oxford for the submission of
an entry will be on the 31st August 2004.

Prime Minister's Award for Sustainable Communities 2004 Nominations
are invited for projects and initiatives of all types and sizes
that are contributing to making towns, cities and rural communities
in England better places in which to live and work. All projects
and initiatives must demonstrate active involvement of the community

- Germany: The Bauhaus Dessau
Foundation will be presenting the International
Bauhaus Award for the third time on October 23rd, 2004. The
Third International Bauhaus Award will be conferred for urbanite
projects addressing new spatial relations of "Transit Spaces":
transnational agglomerations without a city, "diasporic
public spaces", and areas where informal economies intersect.
Closing date for entries is Friday, August 20th, 2004.

Bridge (London-Southend arterial, Basildon) Basildon Renaissance
Partnership (BRP) is seeking expressions of interest from multi-disciplinary
teams to design a new bridge over the A127 (London-Southend arterial)
in Basildon. The deadline for expressions of interest is 4.00pm
on Wednesday 18th August 2004.

Design Competition The U.S. Green Building Council is the
nation's foremost coalition of leaders from across the building
industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally
responsible and profitable, as well as healthy places to live
and work. Deadline for registration: August 15, 2004.
- Venezuela: International
Competition of Ideas
and Proposals for the Grand Central Square of the Plaza Venezuela
Rental Zone, Caracas. One of the projects of a larger urban
plan complex, which represents the largest cultural and commercial
large scale urban development in Latin America. Grand Central
Square will become the most important public open space in Caracas.

- USA: Norwalk
Housing Design Competition -in response to the need for below-market-rate
housing in the City of Norwalk, Connecticut, the Housing Authority
of the City of Norwalk (NHA) is sponsoring a housing design competition
for exemplary site and unit plans for first-time homebuyers,
entry- and mid-level professionals, and fixed-income seniors.

- France: International
Architecture Competition for the realisation of the Olympic landmark
in Paris launched by Paris 2012, the organisation leading
Paris' bid to host the XXX Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012
and organised by the Pavillon de l'Arsenal, the information,
documentation and exhibition centre for urban design and architecture

Germany: future
point - studentcompetition
In addition to presenting a large number of innovations, imm
cologne is now also launching an international competition for
students of architecture and design. Commissioned by imm cologne,
the Faculty of Architecture at Cologne University of Applied
Sciences is organizing and curating the exhibition and the award
for the "future point" student competition. Deadline:

Competition for new Antarctic Research Station A major international
competition to design a new scientific research station at one
of the Earth's most extreme environments Antarctica.

USA: Green
Tent - A sustainable camping shelter -Ecoshack is asking
for designs for a camping shelter for use in the Mojave Desert,
in and around "Joshua Tree National Park". The programme
requires construction of a structure designed on the basis of
sustainability criteria and providing a space measuring about
4 sq. m. with a height of 1.20 m to 2.10 m. The registration
deadline is July 30, 2004.
Lebanon: Urban Design for Martyrs'
Square and the Grand Axis of Beirut (Lebanon) The Lebanese
development corporation SOLIDERE s.a.l. launches an international
ideas competition, open and anonymous, in two stages, for the
urban design of Martyrs' Square and the Grand Axis of Beirut.
In conformity with the UNESCO-UIA regulations concerning international
competitions in architecture and town planning, this competition
has been approved by the International Union of Architects (UIA).

UK: Renewing
the Heart and Soul of Central Salford -Salford is inviting
the world's most inspirational architects, designers, planners
and economic experts to submit plans that will achieve its ambition
to breathe new life into the central area of the city. In the
biggest renaissance Salford has ever seen, they are being invited
to take part in an international competition to design a vision
and blueprint to transform Central Salford over the next 20 years.

UK: Byker
Estate-Newcastle Council are going to develop high density
family housing on two inner city brownfield sites in the Byker
area in Newcastle -part of a mixed tenure development on the
edge of a low demand housing estate ... and it has to be sustainable,
a carbon neutral development at the very least. Entries by 16th
July.
- UK: The
Armed Force Memorial Design Competition A unique opportunity
for teams of Architects, Sculptors and Landscape Architects to
design a new National Memorial to the men and women of the UK
Armed Forces killed on duty or as a result of terrorist action
since the end of the Second World War. Closing deadline for expressions
of interest: 16 July 2004

for the 21st Century- Community Centres in Three Countries:

Brick Awards 2004 The
Brick Development Association (BDA) has launched the Brick Awards
2004. The industry awards scheme is designed to highlight excellence
in brickwork, whether in architectural, structural, landscape
or craft applications. The closing date for entries is Friday
9 July 2004.
- UK: The
Philip Webb Award 2004 An annual award for Part II students
at UK Schools of Architecture. Philip Webb and William Morris
were the main founders of the Society for the Protection of Ancient
Buildings in 1877. The purpose of the Award is to to encourage
new design in the context of historic buildings and to develop
an appreciation of old buildings amongst architectural students,
through an understanding of the architectural and historical
values of old buildings and the purpose, philosophy and techniques
of conservation. The closing date for entries is no later than
4pm on the Friday 9th July 2004.
- UK: Olympic
sports venue -The London Development Agency has launched
a competition to design the Aquatics Centre for the London 2012
Olympic Games and Paralympic Games bid. The flagship swimming
facility is set to be built on a disused site five minutes from
Stratford Station in the Lower Lea Valley, East London. The closing
date for entries is 5 July 2004.

- Night places' Architecture Award -Competition for European
architects under 33.The Parma Festival of Architecture is inviting
European architects under 33 to compare their achievements by
submitting a selection of their work. The registration deadline
is June 30, 2004.
- UK: Any
Old Street Competition The Architecture Foundation is launching
a competition, on behalf of EC1 New Deal for Communities and
London Borough of Islington, to select a design team to redesign
the public space around Old Street in London. The deadline for
entries will be 30 June.
- UK: Schindler
Award for Architecture "Access for All" The Council
of Europe has designated 2003 as the European Year of People
with Disabilities. Schindler, the world's largest manufacturer
of escalators and second largest manufacturer of elevators, is
collaborating with the European Commission as a Corporate Partner
during this important year. The competition is aimed at students
in their last two years of study at major European schools of
architecture. Deadline for submission of entries is Wednesday,
June 30, 2004.

of Colour Think of a street or part of a street - or even
an area of a village - which you feel is desperately in need
of repainting or restoring to enhance its original appeal or
to give it a new and better look. Propose a colour scheme and/or
colour treatment using Keim mineral paint ranges and submit the
entry form describing the concept of your scheme including historically
relevant facts where appropriate. To 30th June 2004.
- UK: The
12th Copper in Architecture Awards Entries are sought from
architects based in UK and Eire for a number of award categories.
Projects should feature copper elements in the design of the
building; cladding, roofing etc. Closing date is 30th June 2004

Jovenes Architectos en Andalucia 2004 student competition
sponsored by the government of Andalucia. Last date for entries

UK: Children's
Centre Project -Competitive Interview
- Expressions of interest are
invited for a competitive interview to select an architectural
team for the design of an innovative, multipurpose new HQ for
a number of children's voluntary organisations. Expressions of
interest should be sent to the RIBA Competitions Office no later
than 16.00 hours on Wednesday 23 June 2004.
- Hong Kong: Development
of West Kowloon Cultural District Hong Kong A prime waterfront
site of about 40 hectares at West Kowloon has been earmarked
for development by the private sector into a world class arts,
cultural, commercial and entertainment district. The deadline
for submission of proposals is 19 June 2004.
UK: Pheasants
Mill End Henley on Thames Expressions
of interest are invited from architects seeking an opportunity
to design a new £650,000 family house that will integrate
the best of contemporary design with proven modern technology.
The competition is open to registered architects and architectural
practices. The deadline for receipt of practice profiles is 16.00
hours Wednesday 16th June.

Burnham Prize Competition 2004 - Urban Waterways. The Burnham
Prize Competition is a two-round biennial competition sponsored
by the Chicago Architectural Club, the winner of which is awarded
a three month scholarship for study at the American Center in
Rome. Round II due: June 11, 2004
- UK/world: The
World Habitat Awards were established in 1985 by the Building
and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) as part of its contribution
to the United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.
These awards are given annually to human settlements projects
that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing
needs and problems, in both developed and developing countries
and which are capable of replication. Deadline for submission:
1 June 2004.

the public domain -Fusedspace is a new international, on-line
competition for ideas on innovative application of new technology
in the public domain. The competition is open to artists, architects,
designers, students and anyone who is interested in the subject.

Design Consultancy for the Waterfront at Singapore's Downtown
at Marina Bay. The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore
has just launched an international design consultancy for the
waterfront around Marina Bay. The intention is to short-list
consultant teams with a view of selecting the design propsoal
and appointing the Project Consultant for implementation of a
new SGD$40M waterfront promenade and a new SGD$68M pedestrian
cum vehicular bridge. The submission deadline for Stage One of

Awards 2004 -The aim of The Wood Awards is to recognise and
encourage outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation
in joinery and structures in timber. The next Wood Awards will
take place at Carpenters' Hall on Tuesday 19th October 2004.

Centre at the Nakdong River The Busan International Architectural
Competition Organizing Committee, which is a part of the Busan
International Architectural Culture Festival under the auspices
of the UIA, has organized the 3rd International Architectural
Ideas Competition around the installation of an Ecological Center
that will be placed in the Nakdong River Area of Busan. Registration
by 17th May 2004.
- International VELUX Award for Students of Architecture. In September 2004, an international
jury will give prizes to the most exceptional daylight projects
from students at architecture schools throughout Europe. The
theme of the award will be the use of daylight in buildings.
The projects need not be fully detailed, a concept is just as
eligible.

Competition for the Development of the Montmorency Falls Area
-Quebec City was founded in 1608 and will celebrate its 400th
anniversary in 2008. The city was founded on an exceptional site
overlooking the St. Lawrence River. As the provincial capital,
Quebec City has a rich history and is known for the quality of
its urban environment, the architecture of its buildings as well
as its natural environment. By initiating the international competition
for new ideas for the development of the Montmorency Falls area,
Quebec City wishes to undertake a reflection on the future of
the city's eastern riverfront. The City and its partners hope
that proposals received will not only serve to revitalize this
under-utilized and isolated area at the foot of the Montmorency
Falls but also to provide direction for the overall revitalization
of Quebec's eastern riverfront. Final registration date April
23, 2004.

Construction Industry Awards 2004 and The Prime Minister's Better
Public Building Award Now in its 17th year this is an industry-wide
scheme to recognise excellence in the overall design, construction
and delivery of buildings and civil engineering projects. BCIA
has been host to the Prime Minister's Award since its inception
in 1991. Closing date for entries: Thursday22 April 2004.

Crossing, City of Winnipeg International Design Competition 2004
for the redevelopment of Portage Avenue and Main Street, the
historic and commercial centre of the City. The competition has
a construction budget of $10 million (Canadian). A Registered
Architect must be a member of any design team. $100,000 (Canadian)
will be awarded in prize monies. The Competition launch is 2
December 2003 and deadline for submissions is Wednesday 21 April
2004.

VELUX Award 2004 for Students of Architecture. A new prestigious
award focusing on the use of daylight in architectural design
encourages architect students from 40 European countries to create
innovative projects with conscious daylighting design. Registrations
are due April 15th, 2004
- international: Shrinking
Cities -Reinventing the City -An internationally open ideas
competition, commissioned by the project Shrinking Cities. Its
aim is to identify innovative approaches capable of qualifying
the urban transformations associated with the phenomena of shrinkage
and to develop new ideas about the city based on the specific
qualities of shrinkage itself. To apply, interdisciplinary teams
for example, of architects, landscape architects, designers,
artists, sociologists, and anthropologists should be formed.
These teams should submit ideas for projects for the shrinking
cities of four urban regions:Halle/Leipzig (D), Manchester/Liverpool
(UK), Ivanovo (RUS), or Detroit (UK) by the end of April 2004.

Lane Area, International Open Ideas Competition. Bedford
Borough Council and RIBA are launching a competition for ideas
to redevelop and revitalise the Castle Lane area in Bedford Town
Centre which currently provides a mix arts, heritage and car
parking. The Castle Lane area comprises facilities at the Bedford
Museum and Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and the historic Castle
Mound and Gardens which are currently being restored. The area
has been identified as a key development site in the emerging
proposals for the re-development and revitalisation of Bedford
Town Centre. The deadline for submissions is 15th April 2004.

of Santa Marinella Competition for a new town hall The object
of this announcement is a single stage and anonymous competition
to project the new site of the town hall. The competition is
open individuals, companies of engineering and architecture and
to temporary associations of professionals of the E.U. 14 April
2004 - deadline for the competition entries and delivery of projects.
- USA: The
Leading Edge Student Design Competition -The Desert Challenge
: The problem set for 2003-04 involves a community college site
in Palm Desert, California. Design Challenge 1 is to design a
new 28,000 square foot Administration Building; Design Challenge
2 is to design a 4,000 square foot Child Care Center. The Competition
problem set, rules and instructions will be posted on the Leading

- Canada: The
British Columbia Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation (Canada) is
having an open competition to build a provincial law enforcement
monument on the grounds of the Legislature in Victoria. The Legislature
was built by the famous architect Francis Rattenbury who built
many Victoria and Vancouver landmarks. There is no fee to enter.

Facade -Play With It. Studentenwettbewerb. Student competition

Ridges Bridge Design Competition. The Urban Redevelopment
Authority, Singapore, in consultation with the National Parks
Board and the Singapore Institute of Architects, is organising
a Design Competition for two bridges in the Southern Ridges of
Singapore. The Competition calls for suitable designs that will
complement the rustic character of the Southern Ridges' natural
landscape, respect the terrain of the park setting and give a
memorable experience to the visitors of the hill parks. For each
bridge, the Winner will be appointed as the Project Consultant
for the development of the bridge. All submissions must reach
the Promoter not later than 18 March 2004, 12 noon (Singapore
date and time).

and urban landscape while meeting the technical performance standards

Market Square Enhancement Competition. Northampton Borough
Council is seeking expressions of interest from architect-led
multi-disciplinary design teams to work with them on the environmental
regeneration of Northampton's market square. The competition
is supported by the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) and
is being organised on behalf of the Council by the RIBA Competitions
Office. The deadline for expressions of interest is Wednesday
10th March 2004.

Project Competition - EPO The Hague -The European Patent
Organisation (EPO) intends to replace some of the buildings at
the existing site in Rijswijk, near The Hague, with a new structure
of approx. 100,000 sqm in gross area housing the offices of approx.
1,600 staff and ancillary spaces. Deadline for application March

The Artes Mundi Prize
is a new prize, which will recognise visual artists, wherever
they are from in the world. Established to celebrate visual culture
within an international context, the first Artes Mundi Prize

International Idea and Project Competition at Hammerfest
In collaboration with Municipality of Hammerfest Council invites
to an open international idea and project competition to develop
the town 's old Findus site and to build an Arctic Culture Centre.
Today large parts of the town are in a process of transformation,
and the old Findus fish processing site will receive new functions
and be developed to strengthen the town 's identity, turning
it into a beautiful and attractive area of the urban centre.

Veterans Memorial Education Center
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund seeks expressions of interest
and qualifications from design teams interested in being considered
for the design of an underground educational center on the National
Mall in Washington, D.C. Phase One submissions must be postmarked
by no later than Friday, February 20, 2004.

East -A major international competition from East of England
Regional Development Agency calling for visionary ideas for a
landmark or series of landmarks in the east of england, to put
the region on the map, not just nationally but internationally.

- USA: The
San Diego Unified Port District is sponsoring an international
design competition to develop an urban design master plan for
its Downtown Historic Harborfront site, and thereby to select
the team that will oversee the planning and design of this site.
The Port District, acting as the project sponsor, will seek a

Quays New Open Two Stage Competition Kensington Developments are seeking creative ideas
from architect led teams for the design of a new pedestrian only

Scholarship in Architecture -is an annual prize awarded to
exceptional architects or post Part II students of architecture
to enable them to study under their own direction at the British
School in Rome. Applicants must be of British or Commonwealth

Energy Revolution -Solutions for Sustainable Urban Communities

of the Immortals -open international competition, Riverside,
California (USA) The Monument of the Immortals is seeking
a design for a monument that will serve as the bridge between
the history of the ancient and modern Olympiads by listing the
names of all victors from the start of the games in 776 BC through
the modern resurrection in 1896 and for the next 1,000 years.
The competition closes on January 10, 2004.
