- Italy: Living
Box Edilportale.com is now accepting submissions for its
Living Box competition. Entrants should develop a design for
a prefabricated living unit that can be transported by ground
or air. The unit should function as both a permanent or temporary
house that is consistent with contemporary lifestyles. Deadline:
December 31, 2005
- USA: The
West End Pedestrian Bridge Competition -Riverlife Task Force,
Pittsburgh, PA. Open to Architects, Landscape Architects, Urban
Designers, Engineers, Industrial Designers, Artists, and Students.
Open, two-stage hybrid competition--Stage I is open. Stage II
will include an RFQ paid participants and the Stage I finalists.
Situated at the headwaters of the Ohio River, the West End Pedestrian
Bridge will complete a loop of riverfront trails known as Three
Rivers Park. In addition to connecting Pittsburgh's shorelines,
the bridge will enhance the city's skyline and provide new access
points to the riverfront from neighborhoods now separated by
highways and parking lots. Registration period to December 21,
2005.
USA: Southpoint:
from Ruin to Rejuvenation, the Roosevelt Island Universal Arts
Center International Ideas Competition. The AIA NY Chapter
Emerging New York Architect Committee is announcing the second
biennial international ideas competition to explore issues of
universal design and historic rejuvenation in developing a visual
/ performing arts center on Roosevelt Island. Deadline for registration
is extended to December 18th, 2005.
Italy: International
Design competition "MOdAM - Museum and School of Fashion.
The City of Milan announces an International Design Competition,
to be held by restricted procedure in a single anonymous stage,
with pre-qualification of competition participants, for the preliminary
design of the MOdAM-Museum and School of Fashion. Deadline for
Delivery of Materials: Participants must deliver documentation
described at articles 3.1 and 3.2 to Protocollo Generale (Registry)
by 4:00 p.m. on December 12, 2005.
USA: The
eighth annual international Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for
Architectural Design Excellence 2006. The Berkeley
Prize, which advocates the study of architecture as a social
art, sponsors an Essay Competition and a Travel Fellowship
Competition completely via the internet. This year's competitions
are focused on "Children and the City" and are dedicated
to the UNESCO Growing Up In Cities Programme. The competitions
are open to full-time architecture undergraduate students and
teams they may form with other undergraduates in the allied arts
and Social Sciences. Essay Competition winners will share
in a $6000 purse with a minimum $3500 First Prize. Competition
proposals due by Dec 10th 2005.
Ireland: The Art Box Design ideas Competition
- organised by The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland,
this design competition aims to create a mobile performance and
exhibition space. The Art Box will provide a venue which professional
artists, arts organisations, community and voluntary groups can
use to stage exhibitions and events within their own locale.
The space must be innovative and demonstrate quality and excellence
in its design and the execution of that design. The standards
within the structure must be equivalent to those in fixed exhibition
and performance venues. The Art Box must be a flexible structure
which serves the needs of its many and varied users and audiences.
The total budget construction should not be in excess of ¤750,000.
Submission date: 9 December 2005.
- UK: Whitefield
Ward Design Competition. Selection of a multi-disciplinary
team to revitalise and transform a part of the highly profiled
Whitefield ward in Nelson, Lancashire. The competition will be
held in two stages, stage one expressions of interest, stage
two submission of concept design proposals. Submission deadline:
8 December 2005.
USA: Request
for Proposals: Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage and Salt Facility
The Department of Sanitation of New York City invites intends
to build a new maintenance and storage structure for their fleet
of vehicles for Manhattan Districts 1, 2, and 5. The new structure
will serve areas including the Hudson waterfront and Lower Manhattan,
Little Italy, Greenwich Village, and the Flatiron District up
through midtown to Central Park. Located on Spring Street between
Washington and West Streets, the new building will be adjacent
to the upscale boutiques and loft residences of Soho, directly
north of the Holland Tunnel, and at the southern end of an industrial
swathe that reaches up through the meatpacking district to Chelsea.

International:
Living Steel International
Competition for Sustainable Housing. Can you house 8 billion
people? The challenge is to address the global housing requirement
in a way that respects our environment and economically meets
society's aspirations. Living Steel, a worldwide programme to
stimulate innovation in the design and construction of housing,
has launched an international architectural competition to take
on the challenge. In the course of the five-year programme two
invited international competitions for sustainable housing are
being undertaken, in Poland and India. The final date for receipt
of expressions of interest is 1 December 2005.
UK: Design
ideas competition for Dover. Kent County Council have launched
a design competition, on behalf of Dover Pride, to encourage
the most talented designers, architects, artists and students
to come up with a creative and practical design idea for Dover,
one of the best-known towns in the UK. The competition closes
on 28 November.
Russia: International
Architectural Competition of Ideas "Time in a city".
Organizers: Centre for Architecture and construction "Dom
na Brestskoy"; Deadline of work submission - the 20th of
November, 2005.
Ireland: Development of Lands at Scalaheen,
Co. Tipperary The RIAI (Royal Institute of the Architects
of Ireland), in conjunction with Tipperary Town Council, is pleased
to announce the launch of a One Stage Design Competition for
the design of 3, 4 & 5 Bedroom Houses at Scalaheen, Co. Tipperary.
Closing date of competition: Friday 18 November 2005.
- Germany: Architecture
+ Technology Award 2006 -European prize for architecture
and technology presented in recognition of projects which combine
exemplary architectural design with innovative engineering. All
projects entered must be located in Europe, must not be older
than three years, and must have been fully operational for at
least one year when the competition was announced (15 March 2005).
Submission: 16 November 2005.
Thailand: Tsunami Memorial Competition
The Government of Thailand invites individuals or teams to participate
in an international design competition. Registration information
has been placed online. Site visits October 7/October 28, 2005.

Peru: International
Architectural Contest "CHAN
CHAN 2006. This idea contest is promoted by ARQUITECTUM in
order to evaluate the possibility of installing a Beach Lodge
that serves not only as an observatory from which to look at
the fabulous citadel of Chan Chan, but also to provide temporary
lodging for tourists (local and foreign) that wish to spend the
night at the place, by the sea. Early Registration until November

USA: URBAN
VOIDS: Grounds for Change, an international design ideas
competition for Philadelphia's vacant land. Van Alen Institute
and City Parks Association invite participants from around the
world to suggest compelling ideas for Philadelphia's vacant land
and imagine fantastic long-term solutions that inspire change
and reshape urban and natural forms throughout the city. Registration
Ends: Monday November 14, 2005.
Estonia: International Open Architecture
Architecture Competition for the new Estonian National Museum
Building Complex -The Estonian National Museum in cooperation
with the Ministry of Culture and the Union of Estonian Architects
announces an international architecture competition for the new
Estonian National Museum building complex. The goal of the architecture
competition is to achieve the best architectural solution for
the new Estonian National Museum building complex, including
planning of the grounds. The competition ends on 10 November
2005.
- UK: Central
Promenade Site, Morecambe. The RIBA Competitions Office,
in conjunction with Urban Splash and Lancaster City Council,
is pleased to announce the launch of the competition to search
for an team to produce a strategic framework plan for the beautiful
4.7 hectare Central Promenade Site, Morecambe, which lies on
the glorious sweep of Morecambe Bay and is adjacent to the Art
Deco classic Grade II* Listed Midland Hotel, which Urban Splash
is refurbishing. The jury panel includes Ken Shuttleworth RIBA
(Make Architects), Hugh Pearman (Architecture critic and author),

Nigeria: The
African Institute of Science and Technology (AIST) - New Campus.
The African Institute of Science and Techology (AIST) is seeking
to select an architect led design team to design its first campus
to be situated in Abuja, Nigeria. The AIST will ultimately comprise
several science and technology higher education campuses and
smaller affiliated centers of excellence located throughout Sub-Saharan
Africa (SSA). Submission deadline of 7 November 2005.
- USA: Oklahoma
City Bus Stop Design Competition -The AIA Central Oklahoma
Chapter in partnership with Oklahoma City Metro Transit invite
you to create a design proposal for the 2005 Bus Stop Design
Competition. Late registration and submission deadline 7th November.
UK: Invited
Design Competition -Major residential development, Park Street
and Grafton Street, Liverpool 8. The RIBA Competitions Office,
on behalf of Liverpool City Council, NewHeartlands, developer
MJ Gleeson Group Plc, Include, Brunswick Neighbourhood Plan Steering
Group, Plus Housing Group and Cosmopolitan Housing Association,
is launching a design competition to create a new residential
neighbourhood of a quality that reflects the changes in the City
and which takes account of a unique opportunity to build a new
and sustainable community. Expression of Interest deadline is
4.00pm, Wednesday 2 November 2005.
UK: Clay
Roofing Awards 2005 -designed to recognise and celebrate
the most stunning and visually appealing roofscapes that have
been created using genuine clay roof tiles over the last two
years. The awards are split into various categories covering
both new build and refurbished projects in housing developments,
commercial schemes and ecclesiastical projects. In addition to
this there is an award for the best self-build project. Architects,
specifiers, developers and self-builders have until 31st October
05 to submit their entries.
UK: The
ReardonSmith Student Award 2005 for the best design of a
small hotel bedroom and bathroom. For the fourth year running,
ReardonSmith Architects is organising an award scheme for students
of architecture and design studying at a college in Europe.
The competition is open to both individuals and teams studying
at the same college; a tutor's signature will be required to
that effect. Closing date 31st Oct 2005.
- Finland: The
Millenium Technology Prize -The world's largest technology
prize acknowledges innovations that directly promote people's
quality of life, are based on humane values, and encourage sustainable
economic development. Nominations are accepted from hich-tech
companies, industry organisations, research institutes, universities
as well as science and engineering academies. During the selection
process, innovations will be classified into the following four
fields: Communications and Information; Energy and the Environment;
Health Care and Life Sciences; New Materials and Processes.

Korea: International
Urban Ideas Competition for the New Multi-functional Administrative
City The Presidential Committee on Multifunctional Administrative
City Construction is holding an International Urban Ideas Competition
to gather advanced and innovative urban design and planning concepts
to develop a global urban paradigm for the New Multi-functional
Administrative City in the Republic of Korea. Submission period:

USA: Bienal
Miami + Beach 2005 Open International Competition of "unbuilt"
architectural work via the internet 2005. This architecture competition
follows the successful electronic competition of unbuilt work
celebrated at the Bienal Miami + Beach 2001 & 2003. Registration

Slovenia: CITY OF SKYCRAPERS
will run as part of 3rd INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENALLE LJUBLJANA:
EUPHORIA, organized by the Monochrome Arhitekti. It will take
place at various venues across Ljubljana from 17 to 30 November
2005. Interesting events exhibitions, lectures, projections
and round tables will once again host internationally highly
renowned architects, designers, musicians and theoreticians.

Chicago Prize: Water Tanks -The purpose of this project is
to promote awareness of urban water tanks within the City of
Chicago and to encourage their preservation either as artifacts,

- USA: Pamphlet
Architecture 28! Following the success of the inaugural "call
for ideas," which produced the Pamphlets 2327, Pamphlet
Architecture, with renewed support from the National Endowment
for the Arts, announces the 2005 competition. The deadline for
submissions is October 10, 2005.
Taiwan: Taichung Metropolitan Opera House
International Competition The Municipality of Taichung City

International:
Travel
+ Leisure magazine Design Awards -Travel and Leisure Magazine
is currently accepting entries for its second annual Design Awards,
recognizing outstanding design and architecture in eleven categories:
hotels, restaurants, museums, retail spaces, and more. To be
considered, projects must be completed between October 1, 2004
and December 31, 2005. The winners will be featured in the magazine's
March 2006 issue. Entry deadline is October 3.
China: FAR
8 Competition -FAR, the Gallery for European Architecture
in Shanghai, is announcing an international open idea competition
about hyper density in future urban environments. The results
will all be exhibited online, the winners will be awarded and

- USA: WindsCape,
An Ideas Competition Envisioning Renewable Energy for Cape Cod
Currently there is a proposal to build a 130 turbine wind farm
off the coast of Cape Cod, MA. This would be the largest of its
kind in the world and would provide 75% of the power for the
region.. The project has been the subject of much controversy
for more than 4 years as the review process moves ahead. How
do we address the addition of wind farms to our physical and
cultural landscape? The Boston Society of Architects challenges
designers to expand this dialogue by envisioning a wind farm
that is more than just a utility to generate electricity. Entrants
are challenged with designing an experience that enriches the
landscape, educates the public about wind power, and provides
a direct connection for the community to their energy source
while maintaining the economic viability of a utility-scale wind

Di Pietra -Land of Stone -First International Design Competition
for the Marble of Custonaci. The participants to the competition
are asked to draft objects useful for new applications, with
particular reference to all types of marble extracted in the
territory of Custonaci in the Sicilian Province of Trapani -
Italy. The competition is open to designers, architects, groups
of designers, classes of students from Public or Private schools,
Italians and Foreigners. The closing date is the 28th September
2005.
new USA: Biennal
Miami + Beach 2005. International student competition for
the design of the west entrance of Lincoln Road Mall in Miami
Beach. Lincoln Road can be seen as a unique piece in the Miami
Beach street network, partially crossing the island as an elongated
narrow plaza full of pedestrian activities, restaurants, shops
and cultural venues. The competition calls for ideas to explore
the design possibilities of a new western entrance to Lincoln
Road mall at the corner of Lincoln and Alton Roads, and eventually
extending the design until the western edge of Lenox Avenue.

- Japan: 1st
DoCoMo International Architectural Design Competition 2005.
This spatial design competition seeks new proposals concerning
the relationship between the urban environment and keitai in
the near future. What sorts of conditions, forms and environments
will the "keitai city" exhibit? Competition entrants
are encouraged to propose images of the future of a "keitai
society" unconstrained by preconceptions, or proposals for
new spatial designs that make today's assumed worldview seem
hackneyed. Deadline for registration and submission of work September
26, 2005.
Europe: Europan 8 - Europan
is directed at young architects and young professionals in related
creative fields, under forty years of age and from Europe. Europan
is a call for ideas followed by implementations. A series of
urban sites in European towns, accompanied by a programme brief,
is proposed to competitors. Submissions by Sept 26th 2005.
Spain: Advanced
Architecture Contest -as part of the research program in
the Master of Advanced Architecture, the Institute for Advanced
Architecture of Catalonia are now organizing an international
competition of architecture. The main goal of this competition
is the development of self-sufficient dwellings in which technological
elements are essential components of a new architectural concept
and not only a reflection of an attachment to conventional ideas
about houses. Closing date for registration: Monday 19 September
2005.
Australia: The Australian Timber
Design Awards is a national competition designed to showcase
and encourage the innovative structural and aesthetic use of
timber in Australia. The awards are open until 16 September.

USA: American
Planning Association New York Metro Chapter -Urban Design Committee
-Public Process/ Public Space Call for Submissions . Some
of the most exciting public engagements in the nation are taking
place in New York City, the Hudson Valley and Long Island as
a result of the many urban design, community planning, landscape
architecture, and architecture projects occurring. To honor these
innovative initiatives, the Urban Design Committee of the New
York Metro Chapter of the American Planning Association is preparing
to launch Public Process/Public Space: Case Studies in Planning
and Urban Design. The online registration for this Call for Submissions
is due on September 16, 2005, and is eligible to all entities
or firms that have conducted projects within the New York City,
Long Island and Hudson Valley metro area.

Union Prize for Cultural Heritage -Europa Nostra Awards.
Since 1980, Europa Nostra has been running the Europa Nostra
Awards Scheme, which aims to recognise and promote high standards
of conservation practice and to stimulate the exchange of knowledge
and experience throughout Europe. It achieves this by giving
public recognition and the largest possible visibility to exemplary
initiatives and best practices by individuals or organisations
which contribute to the protection and enhancement of cultural
heritage in Europe, and by encouraging further efforts through
the "Power of Example". Deadlines: Category 2 -August
1, 2005 ; Category 1 and 3 -September 15 2005.
- UK: New
Hospital Sculpture Competition -The North West London Hospitals
NHS Trust in association with the RIBA, invites submissions for
a single stage international open ideas competition for the design
of an innovative sculptural piece to mark the entrance to the
new BECaD building at Central Middlesex Hospital. The BECaD (Brent
Emergency Care and Diagnostic Centre) building is a PFI project
designed by HLM and Avanti Architects and is due to be completed
in Spring 2006. The competition is open internationally to artists,
landscape architects, architects, urban designers, and professionals
from related disciplines, and students of these disciplines.
Collaboration between disciplines is actively encouraged. The
deadline for submission of design ideas is Wednesday 14th September
2005.

- Expressions of interest are
invited from architects with exceptional design skills and a
willingness to work closely with local people, for the design
of a new Community Library and Adult Education Centre at the
heart of the Birchfield community in Birmingham. The competition

Competition -Elmswell Social Housing Development
- The RIBA Competitions Office
is organising an Invited Design Competition on behalf of the
Suffolk Preservation Society and Orwell Housing Association Ltd,
with the support of Elmswell Parish Council, Inspire East (East
of England Development Agency) and Mid Suffolk District Council.
Architectural practices are invited to submit Expressions of
Interest for a project to build a social housing development
in the village of Elmswell, Suffolk. The competition seeks cutting-edge
designs that will integrate truly sustainable, high quality architecture
with landscape design. The Expression of Interest deadline is
Wednesday 7 September 2005.
Argentina: Concursos UNCuyo -The
Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, announces an international
architecture competiton for The New Music's School
Building in Mendoza, Argentina. The goal of the architecture
competition is to achieve the best architectural solution for
the new building. Deadline of work submission - the 7th of September,
2005.
UK: Bolton
Great Estates Urban Design Competition -Organised by RIBA
Competitions Office on behalf of Bolton at Home. Suitably qualified
architects, landscape architects, town planners and urban designers
are invited to submit Expressions of Interest for an exciting
and ambitious 'investment in place' project to revitalise the
overall apperance of Bolton at Home's Estates at the street and

Canada: Peepshow
International Pavilion Design Competition 2005 -Artcity Festival
is a celebration of contemporary visual art, architecture and
design, held every September in Calgary, Canada. Artcity opens
possibilities for conversations, debates and realizations about
how and what artists, architects and designers do and how they
see and shape the world around us. Submission Deadline Sept 1st

- Peru: Architectum
GLOBAL HOUSE 2005- International Contest designed for students,
baccalaureates and architects younger than 28 years old from
around the world. The aim is to collect the best ideas about
what houses ought to be like in this current Global Village,
researching and incorporating aesthetic, plastic, functional,
technological and even social patterns that may be part of the
particular context in which the contestant is currently in. Registration

2005 (City, Street & Culture) International Idea Competition
on Architecture / Urban Design / Landscape Architecture / Visual
Design. Open to professionals and students of urban design, architecture,
landscape design, art and visual/industrial design, and teams
made up of professionals or students of these fields. The objective
of the Revitalization of Gwangbok Street & PIFF Plaza is
to create an attractive urban space in the center of Jung-gu
in order to revitalize a district that has been diminished and
weakened in terms of population and urban functions. Deadline

Why should architects, designers, and planners refuse to work
on prisons? Don't ask us- design a poster to explain it to design
professionals yourself! This design competition calls for a poster
than explains the problems with the current U.S. prison system
and why the refusal to contribute to it is an important and effective

- Poland: Competition
for the architectural design concept of the Concert Hall and
Wolnosci Square in Wroclaw. The City of Wroclaw is pleased
to announce the competition for the architectural design concept
of the Concert Hall and Wolnosci Square in Wroclaw. Inspiration
for this Concert Hall construction came from the cooperation
of the Karol Lipinski Musical Academy and Wroclaw City authorities.

Norway: Competition: Pedestrian
bridge in Bergen, Norway (PDF download). The city of Bergen
and partners are launching a limited architectural competition
(plan and design competition) for a new pedestrian bridge across
Puddefjorden. The bridge will tie old docklands closer to Bergen
city centre. It will also be a part of the city's project for
sustainable development in the area. The material for prequalification
must be received by the city of Bergen within the 19th of August,
2005.
Italy: International
ideas competition for the requalification of Latina's coastal
territory. Municipality of Latina, Italy. European single
phase competition for the urban reorganisation of the entire
coastal area (approximately 2500 hectares), the environmental
restoration of the dune area and the recovery and up-grade of
the territory's most interesting landscape. Closing day for application:
15 August 2005.
- UK : Kielder
Observatory -open competition for a new observatory to be
located in the hills surrounding Kielder Village in Northumberland.
The project is being developed through Kielder Partnership's
commissioning programme Art and Architecture at Kielder. The
new observatory will take advantage of Kielder's dark skies and
lack of light pollution - users will include specialist and amateur
astronomers, researchers, and small educational groups. Submissions
due early August.
- Czech Republic: Centre
for Czech Architecture (Centrum architektury), Prague -a
competition for ideas to design a Centre for Czech Architecture
in Prague. The center would be designed to house a meeting and
resource place for three Czech architecture organizations as
an infill to a historic site in the center of Prague. This International
Ideas Competition is presented in conjunction with the AIA Committee
on Design conference to be held September 17-23, 2005, in Prague,
Czech Republic. Registration deadline: August 1, 2005.
USA: Pangea
Institute -a mixed use community proposed for Boulder, Colorado.
The site will include residential units, retail spaces, an education

-Urban Design Competition - the first great addition to Sydney
Harbour's environment for the 21st Century. A 22-hectare site
sits on Sydney Harbour at the western foreshore of the city's

to create a new western edge to the city. A mix of recreational
and working uses will ensure that this exceptional site will
provide a new and significant open space area on the forshore
for all to enjoy, and provide a showpiece of excellence in waterfront

Korea: International Competition
for the Design of the Asian Culture Complex in Gwangju -The
Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) of Korea intends to build
a culture complex, which accommodates various forms of arts and
cultural events, in the southwestern hub city of Gwangju. The
complex, named tentatively Asian Culture Complex (ACC), is aimed
for promot-ing Asian values in arts and culture. The Executive
Agency for Culture Cities of the MCT invites architects around
the world for the design of ACC to the Open International Project
Competition in a Single Stage approved by UIA. Registration due

It will be Dallas's first low-impact development. Urban Reserve

Residential Design Competition 2005. The 2005 World Sustainable
Building Conference (SB05Tokyo) will be held from September 27th
to 29th, 2005. Each year since 1965, The Shinkenchiku Residential
Design Competition has called for entries that explore new potential
in architecture through the design of the residence, a place
for human dwelling," asking an architect of international
standing to serve as a judge in selecting the winning submission.
This time, in a departure from past competitions, two architects,
Tadao Ando and Richard Rogers, will serve as judges. All entries
must reach the competition office no later than June 13th (Monday),
2005.
- Korea: Seoul
Opera House Competition -Seoul Performing Arts Center are
seeking "creative designs" from professional and amateur
architects worldwide to build the city's future opera house on
an artifical island in the Han River. The facility will consist
of a 1.5-hectare (3.7-acre) state-of-the-art complex. Plans are
to build it on Nodeul Island by 2009. There is no permanent facility
on Nodeul Island at present except for several outdoor tennis
courts. The island is located across from Mapo, and can be reached
only by vehicles crossing the Hangang Bridge, which intersects
the center of the island. The deadline for registration is June
10.

Unseen Wellness is a design competition organized by the
department of Industrial Design of the Technische Universiteit
Eindhoven in the Netherlands, supported by the Italian wellness
company Technogym. We hope to involve young designers and design
students in the discussion about the role of pleasure and wellness
in interactive products. The competition is part of the Designing
Pleasurable Products and Interfaces 2005 conference that unites
international players from both industry and academics to share

Competition to Design an Ideal Library, Cork, Ireland -The
Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) is administering

Walk of Fame -design competition to create a new and exciting
'streetscape' for what has become one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Toronto. A jury on behalf of Canada's Walk of
Fame is accepting submissions from designers, architects and

platform to honour Walk of Fame inductees. All designs must be

UK: Design
for Manufacture Competition. The UK Government has announced
that there will be a competition to demonstrate that it is possible
to build a good-quality home for a construction cost of GBP 60,000.
The figure of GBP 60,000 is a target construction cost, not a
development cost or a sale price. English Partnerships will run
the competition for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM)
and has published a Notice in the Official Journal of the European

Council's Executive Board are running an 'open Ideas' International
Design Competition for the refurbishment of Bonn Square. Their
vision is for a design for that demonstrates the best contemporary
work of artists, urban designers, landscape architects, architects
and town planners; a design that creates a dynamic, inspirational
city square which people will love and use and will become the
hub of the revitalised west end of the city centre; a design
that respects and enhance the setting of Bonn Square within the

design -An international architectural competition is launched
to help transform central London's viaducts. Cross River Partnership
(CRP) working with Spacia, the property arm of Network Rail,
has launched the competition to identify outstanding design ideas
for the network of railway arches which carve through riverside
central London. The competition, managed by the Royal Institute
of British Architects, forms part of a wider strategy by CRP
to transform the viaducts which carve through riverside central
London south of the river. Called Light at the End of the Tunnel,
the strategy aims to reduce the dissecting effect of the viaducts.
From Vauxhall to London Bridge alone, there are ten kilometres
of viaduct housing almost 1000 railway arches, and containing

prior to the beginning of construction.

Alen Institute competition for the design of a pavilion adjacent
to the famed Parachute Jump in Coney Island. The first prize

Parachute Pavilion: an Open Design Competition for Coney Island
invites designers worldwide to generate innovative design proposals
for a project that contributes to a 21st-century vision for Coney
Island. In concert with the Coney Island Development Corporation's
(CIDC) planning initiatives, Van Alen Institute (VAI) is directing
a competition for a project ambitious in program and design on
a significant site in Coney Island's amusement district, in the
shadow of the famed Parachute Jump-an iconic reminder of Coney
Island history that is now a designated landmark. The Pavilion
design will play a key role in the ongoing revival of Coney Island,
with implications for urban recreation in New York City waterfront

Fe Civic Center Competition -The City of Santa Fe, New Mexico
is sponsoring a competitive selection process to select a design
team for its new civic center. The new facility is intended to
help meet a variety of community needs including attractive and
affordable public space for conferences and meetings, large annual
city-wide events of long standing Santa Fe tradition, community
group events, and small occasions that bring together families.
The new facility will include civic center spaces and a 600-car
underground parking garage. It is estimated to have a total project
cost of approximately $42 million and will include approximately
72,500 square feet of new construction. The City plans to complete
construction of this project expeditiously, within budget, while
preserving environmental, natural, and archeological resources.

Roca Design Competition -The Hotel Bathroom of the Future.
BCD (Barcelona Design Centre) is collaborating with the Spanish
multi-national company Roca in the organisation of a design competition
for students and product and/or interior design, architecture

and the United Kingdom. Roca aims to launch a platform for young
creative people, giving them the opportunity and freedom to design
a personal environment related to the hotel bathroom of the future.

Letherium Competition -open ideas competition. The aim of
the competition is to solicit design propositions for a revitalised
institution, and is open to architects, designers, artists and
interested citizens alike. Applicants wishing to submit a proposal
to the MLC for consideration in the competition must have all
materials postmarked by Feb 1st 2004.
- Peru: Nazca
2005 -Arquitectum, an enterprise dedicated to the development
of architectural bidding contests, is pleased to welcome all
architects from around the world to the International Architectural
Competition "Nazca 2005", which will take place from
November of this year until February of 2005. Registration Deadline
January 30th, 2005
- Mexico: 7th
International Arquine Competition for architects and students.
The theme is "Frontera/Border". Different urban and
architectural themes are addressed each year in the competition:
"Re-Inhabiting the Center of Mexico City", "The
Twenty-First-Century House", "Documentary Center of
Modern Latin-American Architecture", and "The Park
of the Senses", among others. This year's competition deals
with the theme of the border, proposing a "pedestrian border
crossing" in response to the importance of the border zone
between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, where countless Mexicans
cross year after year to work in the United States. Registration by 28th Jan 2005.
- Europe: Architekturbild has
launched its sixth
annual architectural photography competition in association
with German architecture journal db. This year's theme is "Places
of Work". The competition has a total prize of 5000 Euro,
and the entry deadline is January 28 2005.
Canada: Concours Call for
candidatures -Montréal's Quartier des spectacles -
Development of an iconography, branding and identification. The
Quartier des spectacles Partnership of Montréal wishes
to inform all interested professional firms that it is conducting
a search for candidates interested in the a development project
concerning iconography, branding and identification.
