Korea: The 26th Space Prize for International Students of Architectual Design
Application deadline: June 20, 2008
Theme Where, how do you live? Program New dwellings in a changing society. If the 20th Century was a period of change, when the impact of the Industrial Revolution became apparent in various sectors of the society, the 21st Century is already witnessing another transformation; it is difficult to enumerate the complexities of this new century, ranging from the movement of huge amounts of capital with the expansion of globalization and the intricacies of class differences, to lifestyle changes due to new technologies. We hope that students will read the signs of these changing patterns of the 21st Century society in their respective surroundings, cities, and countries, and propose new styles of dwellings reflecting the emergence of these new lifestyles. The dwelling may be for a single person or new types of families, and may even be collective dwellings. As modern architects in the early 20th Century reflected changing new lifestyles with proposals that transcended their era, rather than merely reflecting their times, we hope that applicants will create new alternatives for dwellings based on currently imaginable technological advancements and predictions of future social changes.

Thus, we're looking for urban planning approaches where revamped environments bring current residents together, particularly families. This is a chance to repair the essential relationships between social work, nature and urban infill with ideas that value humanistic thinking and imagination over bulldozers. Ponder the kinds of structures and landscapes that typically exist in run-down areas and transform them into eco-wise spaces that make life better. How might you overcome the inevitable resistance to change, and harness the community's human resources? Introducing eldercare and childcare programs or sustainable landscaping with useable harvests might be just what's needed. The best plans, no matter their originality or scale, will aim to positively affect neighboring blocks as well.

Submissions must be postmarked (not metered) by April 16, 2008.
The Architectural League created the New York Designs juried lecture series in 2003 to provide a forum for the presentation of innovative and accomplished work built in New York City. This year's theme, 'threshold,' focuses on projects whose design mediates distinct conditions.  A 'threshold' might be understood literally as a transitional space that interfaces public and private; that bridges inside and outside; that connects nature and the city or as a conceptual space of overlap between materials, disciplines, cultures, the client and architect, the past and future. What limits, opportunities, and compromises shape thresholds in the city?  What can thresholds tell us about the experience of building in New York City and contemporary design practice? The jury seeks portfolios that situate a project within this liminal space.  Submissions should demonstrate how a space of transition and the act of mediation informed the final project.

The Kunsthaus provides an important cultural contribution to the positioning of Zürich among the metropolises of this world. The project is receiving positive signals from politics, the economy and the population. The Kunsthaus extension is one of the key projects of the municipal council of Zürich and, therefore, listed in a prominent position in the 2006 - 2010 focal points for the legislature.
