CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS BUILDING
IN COLCHESTER

Expressions of interest are invited from multi-disciplinary design teams interested in taking part in a competition for the design of an innovative new multi-million pound visual arts building in Colchester, Essex, UK.

The competition offers an exciting opportunity for those with an interest in contemporary visual arts to design a building that can fulfil the high aspirations of the competition promoter. The vision is to create a landmark building that will have regional, national and international significance. It will be a magnet for culturally led regeneration and tourism, providing a high quality unique experience for the residents of, and visitors to Colchester and East England, that celebrates and stimulates the talent and creativity present in the region. It is anticipated the total build cost will be in the region of £15 million and that it will be completed in approximately 3 years time.

The new building will replace the existing 'firstsite' venue at Minories art gallery, which is acknowledged to be one of the country's leading contemporary visual art galleries. firstsite is the trading name for Colchester and District Visual Arts Trust. Said its Director Kath Wood
"We must look ahead to create a flagship architectural project that can capitalise on firstsite's strengths to create a visitor experience that works socially, economically and culturally. Art can challenge how we think about things, influence our well-being and make significant contribution to our social and economic success".

The jury panel will include internationally know architect/s, Artistic Director of firstsite, Chairperson firstsite, Chief Executive of Colchester Borough Council, an artist of repute who will all be supported by two architectural advisors.

Expressions of interest should be received by Thursday 28th August. Honoraria of £6,000 will be paid to teams invited to compete. For further information on the competition and details of how to register contact the RIBA Competitions Office on 0113 2341335 or visit www.ribacompetitions.com.
