2003 DBEW International Design Competition

The DBEW International Design Competition is commemorating its 3rd year, yearly advancing towards world's most renowned design competition. Just last year, 520 works from 48 countries worldwide were submitted in for the competition, 15 best works were selected for the finals; this year as well, the competition departs from the grand proposition -"Creating new paradigm of design which may be developed for sustainability." Design Beyond East and West; The starting point is the will to harmonize human and nature, the way of resolving the most important issue that mankind is facing at the moment.

1. The Outline of 2003 DBEW International Design Competition

Korea's most renowned furniture and interior company, Hanssem is holding the 3rd DBEW International Design Competition this year. The competition presents US$42,000 as reward money for the winners and worldly renowned professionals from architecture and design field are invited as juries of the competition. Last year, under the background theme of "Design Beyond East and West", there was the sub theme of "DBEW for the One Child Family", DBEW International Design Competition called entries of the architecture / interior / furniture field. This year, Hanssem keeps the theme identical, and awaits for many talented design works.

The 2nd DBEW International Design Competition awards ceremony in Milan
In 2001, the first year of competition, 380 works for 42 countries worldwide were submitted, raising high interest; and last year, 520 works from 48 countries were presented raising high competency. Especially in the 2nd year of the competition, designers working in current fields and design oriented companies presented in their works, thus, the overall quality, not to mention the quantity of the entries augmented. Stimulated by such interest and participation from the design and architecture field, Hanssem decided to open an awards ceremony in Italy's Milan on 10th April this year. The ceremony was originally to be held right after the award announcement, but to show appreciation to the award winners and to promote active interchange, the ceremony was deferred and all award winning teams were invited to Milan at the ceremony.
At the Galles Hotel in Milan, 5pm (Milan time) on 10th April 2003, the 2nd DBEW International Design Competition awards ceremony was held with participation of Mr. Alessandro Mendini, Professor Seok-Chul Kim, Hanssem's CEO, Mr. Chang-Gul Cho, 17 award winners and some 40 related personnel from Korea and abroad were invited. Hanssem's original concept in holding the competition was to find and develop talented designers, thus, Hanssem provided the all the award winners with the air tickets for round-trips, hotel accommodations, and admission fees to the Milan Furniture Fair. The award winners having stayed in Milan on 9th and 10th of April, attended the awards ceremony, visited the Milan Fair and also the office of Mr. Alessandro Mendini. Moreover, 4 teams among the award winning teams have had a special meeting with Mr. Chang-Gul Cho of Hanssem in order to develop a joint design project with Hanssem company.

Design Beyond East and West; For the One Child Family!
The theme of the 3rd year's DBEW International Design Competition is identical to last year's theme "DBEW for the One Child Family". This decision is as to attain the resulting works in depth by rightfully understanding the background theme of the competition, "Design Beyond East & West". The abundance of all things and selfishness of material civilization caused by the Industrial Revolution, has another facet to it, the destruction of orderly nature.
Evolving from Asia, the new design paradigm beyond East and West, should be focused on harmonizing the futuristic trend moving towards the cohabitation of mankind and nature. The key to this question is given to the creator and innovator, the designers. Designers who have conscience of such matters may now concentrate on the substantial issue of creating a living space for a one child family. The three major keywords are as follows. "A digital space guiding towards mutual understanding and not towards extinction, creation of a new kitchen culture for the family, a creative child's room who are to be the leaders of the future".
The juries will judge the design works focusing on the three given keywords, on how they have the innovative problem solving eyes and creative ideas as to create a space harmonizing mankind and nature, a space evolving towards the future with a new paradigm for a logical living space.

Presenting the Online Theme Discussion Ground, "DBEW Talk"
Until 17th September which is the deadline date of submitting entries for the competition, on the official website of DBEW International Design Competition, will be created a ground for in depth theme discussion. On the coming 7th July, the "DBEW Talk", a community and the communication room for designers worldwide will be created on the DBEW Competition website as to give an opportunity to freely discuss on the theme of the competition. On the community of "DBEW Talk", high quality lectures on the theme of the competition. *Attached: Interviews of 2nd year's Grand Prix Winners in the "Monthly Design" Magazine, November 2002

Grand Prix Winners: Federica Lusiardi, Riccardo Bianchini

Monthly Design: What made you participate at the competition?
We found out about the DBEW International Design Competition at Italy's architecture related website and thought the theme was original and that the judges were of high prestige. As we assumed that the overall quality of the event would be rather high (which is not often the case), we have decided to participate.

Monthly Design: Why do you think the Grand Prix was given to you?
Well, it is difficult to say what made our work win the Grand Prix but in our concept of "Sweet Nest Space" there are some factors that we have focused on, and we think that these factors enabled us to attain high score. The core of the project is interaction between people. We planned our social work giving children's viewpoint identical, or even higher prestige than the grown ups' viewpoint. Another important factor is the "balanced relation" among furniture and spaces. The two factors of home would be "food nest" and "knowledge nest", and they face each other and create some kind of an energy flow. Such energy flow differs depending on the change of layout, but it does not destroy the balanced relation between human and things. We wanted to regulate the complex relations, thus we concentrated on the overall space and not simply the collection of things.

Monthly Design : How did you get the inspiration of container and movable space?
The most important issue in our work is the mobility, wonder and flexibility of time and space and so on. Even if we named it "Sweet Nest Space" we did not mean it to be a secluded place from the outside world only for the family members. Actually it's the opposite. We meant it to be a space where family members gather, have relations with others, meet up friends, some place where affection grows and flows.
The importance of movable wall is that we may show the inside of the wall to the outside, all family members may actively move about, and this is more important when there is a child in the family. It is difficult to say how or where we got the inspiration of our work, but I guess we could say that we got hints from the works of Steven Hall and from the movie,"Space Odyssey" of Stanley Kubrick.

Monthly Design : What is your relation like with Hanssem after the competition?
Hanssem informed us the result of the competition by email on 9th October. They swiftly informed us the related articles and gave us many new related information. We are being step by step informed of Hanssem's DBEW International Design Competition that they are organizing and we are happy and satisfied by their attitude. We also know that Hanssem has been good to other entrants as well. It is rare that such big company treats designers with such generosity. If there is a chance that we may work with Hanssem together, we would gladly consent. However, at the moment, we are very excited to receive the award.
