Corus Undergraduate Architects Award 2005: '@ the Olympics 2012'

Corus invites entries to its seventeenth Undergraduate Architects Award (UGAA), the longest established award solely for students of architecture.

The main purpose of the award is to give architecture students a creative vehicle for learning about the use of steel in buildings and to help identify the best emerging architectural talent. The competition is approved by the RIBA.

UGAA 2005 asks students to explore the complex issues surrounding the theme of '@ the Olympics 2012'. The Olympic experience is one of diverse sports held at a widely disseminated selection of sites - sometimes many miles apart with thousands of competitors and spectators needing to find out about, get to and watch the various competitions. With some of the events being mutually exclusive, for instance you could not watch the athletics and yachting from the same venue, there is a need for a venue that can become a 'third place'.

UGAA 2005 entrants will need to consider this 'third place'. A place where participation is facilitated away from the main venue, where information and services can be procured and a public space created which will act as a central hub for the games, wherever they may be held. As it is not known which of the five bid cities will be successful, the design will have to exist in a culturally neutral or culturally adaptive form, able to fit an urban site in New York, Paris, London, Moscow or Madrid. It may exist as one structure or a series of related structures and the programme is open in that respect.

The award is open to students at all British Schools of Architecture recognized by the RIBA, who, at the time of application, are participating in courses leading to Part I and Part II examinations and also to students who are doing courses at recognised British Schools of Architecture equivalent to Part I and Part II and are design orientated. The competition is also open to all students registered in a school of architecture in Europe that is recognized by the professional body of that country. Both undergraduate (equivalent to RIBA Part I) and postgraduate (equivalent to RIBA PART II) students are eligible to enter.

Team entries will also be accepted provided the team members satisfy the requirements of the competition.
