Competition to Select an Architect
Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery Trust
is working to develop a new regional centre for fine arts, crafts
and design in the Corn Exchange, in Bury St Edmunds.
Over the last ten years the Gallery
has established a record and a regional and national reputation
for its current work, and has developed an extensive programme
of activities including educational and outreach work, national
touring exhibitions, publishing and a craft shop. The Gallery
has outgrown its current premises and is severely constrained
by lack of space, poor access and lack of street presence. Following
a feasibility study the Gallery Trust has been offered the opportunity
to develop a new regional centre in the Corn Exchange.
The Trust is now seeking to appoint
an architectural practice who will work in partnership with the
organisation to develop the vision for the new facility, develop
designs and provide costs to enable the Trust's fundraising strategy.
Selection of the architect will be by competitive interview and
these will be held in Bury St Edmunds on Monday 7th July.

Gallery said: "We have the opportunity to build on the success
of our current work in developing an exciting and accessible
centre for exhibitions and activities, and to bring to life the
Corn Exchange as a social centre for Bury St Edmunds. The role
of our chosen architect will be crucial to create a vibrant building
which exemplifies the Trust's interest in material culture and
the importance of arts and designers to the quality of the built
environment".
Architects wishing to find out
more about the competition and how to enter should contact the
RIBA Competitions Office for a preliminary briefing paper. Expressions
of interest should be received by Friday 13th June.
