wood
for good : student design competition
wood. for good, the UK timber
industry's largest promotional campaign, has launched a major
open ideas competition to harness the talent of the UK's best
design students.
The competition, which is being
run in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects
(RIBA), will challenge young designers to develop proposals for
a high profile London development. They must design a mixed use
inner city scheme that may include leisure, retail, commercial
and residential facilities, and will involve new buildings and
the refurbishment of existing structures.
In keeping with wood. for good's
objectives, all designs must be based on sustainable development
and address the wider issues of ecological and environmental
impact.
Charles Trevor, managing director
of wood. for good, says: "Today's student designers are
the architects and engineers of tomorrow, and I'm sure their
response to this competition will be thought provoking for the
entire design community."
Young designers will be asked
to develop proposals for the redevelopment of Gabriel's Wharf
on London's South Bank. The site is part of a 6.5 acre (2.63
ha) site owned by The Coin Street Community Builders (CSCB).
John Fletcher, wood. for good's
project manager says: "CSCB is a community based organisation,
which has also fought hard to address the needs of the environment
and the Coin Street community in all its developments.
"This competition reflects
many of the challenges today's designers have in marrying the
demands of inner city living with environmental and ecological
issues and to which wood offers so many solutions."
The competition is open to all
students of architecture and engineering. The designer of the
best scheme will receive a prize of £5,000, and there are
additional prizes of £3,000 and £1,500 for the second
and third placed schemes.
To date 180 students have requested
and received the competition brief, it is still not too late
for other students to register their interest now. Entrants will
be sent a full design brief along with a CD containing maps,
images and site survey information, as well as a complete set
of information generated by the wood. for good campaign. They
will have until the 28th August 2003 to complete and submit their
design ideas.
The results will be announced
in late September, when the competition assessors judge the winning
entries. Prize presentations will be held at the London Headquarters
of RIBA, after which, regional exhibitions will also take place
to display the winning proposals.
